I am considering moving to rheinfelden (4310) from Basel Stadt. Dont know much about the area, have only visited the apartment and immediate surroundings.
Any comments about the pro's and con's, things which would not be so obvious would be great to have some feedback (particularly from small families).

If you need more choices or just want to save some franks, you can drive over the border and buy your stuff in Germany. The next germany town is also named Rheinfelden.
Klein-Basel and they could`t be happier. There is a lot for them to do after school. They get round the town on the trams without needing to be driven here or there. The local schools (and the teachers) have all been great. My children have several friends who get driven into Basel and fetched by their parents because there is bugger all for them to do out in the sticks. A good example are the Athletic Clubs centered round the Schutzenmatt sports ground. Around eight or nine in the evening the BL and SO cars are double parked with parents picking up their offspring. There is plenty for the grown-ups to do in the town as well. I would`t dream of leaving the town, especially for Rheinfelden unless I got offered a free flat and a job round the corner.
My generic reply would be that Rheinfelden is pretty enough, the German town across the river is shit, and it feels remote and isolated from Basel and, well, everywhere. Imagine the fun you have when you want to take a short flight somewhere, for example.
The good thing about Rheinfelden is that you can catch the boat to Basel. You can`t do that from Frick.
Basel-Stadt.
Well, moved to BS in 2011 and have lived in GrossBasel ever since. Love the area and closeness to the city etc. Now have a growing family (wife + 2 kids) and need more space (also stuck up on third floor with no lift... getting tired of it). The apartment search has been a long, epic, shitty experience. Basically cannot find anything nice and affordable either in BS (prefer Gellert where currently live) or specific areas like binningen / bottmingen. Maybe im just too picky.. but there ares some seriously ugly flats out there.
So, decided to stick Rheinfelden in the search field to see what comes up. On paper seems like a good deal (low tax etc.) and have just visited a nice flat. Hence the question about the area. Anyway the basic needs are the same as most folks: walking distance to public transport, to the local shops, safe area, options for outdoor playing for kids etc. I would miss living in the city a lot.... but now with 2 kids, zero social life. Given the frequent train into Basel I thought this would make the area feel much closer than it is, but but maybe im being naive...
Should you be on your way to the sales department of EF it would also be less obvious if you posted in more recent threads.
One of us will be working in Aargau and the other probably in Zurich. The main (+) for us in living In Rheinfelden is shortest commuting distances. I would like to understand more about the ambience there and local community.
@homesick_alien did you move to Rheinfelden? If so how is life there compared to Gellert (where we are also looking at).

When we decided to move from Kleinbasel in early 2018 we were keen on either St Alban or Gellert. Hardly anything comes up in St Alban being on the Rheinweg and Gellert was at the top end of our budget (we saw a flat we liked there but missed out on it). Anything on offer in St Alban wasn't big enough and some people told us Gellert isn't particularly friendly.
To cut a long story short, we ended up in Breite which is between the 2 and we really like it here. A good mix of couples, young families, middle aged and retired (a lot of the retired are Italians). It's very cheerful, close to the Rhein and the Birs and there are nice places to walk. After living with the sometimes crazy hustle and bustle of Clara in Kleinbasel it's very peaceful - although I still go back to Clara every couple of weeks for the buzz
