Today I was stopped by Zurich police while I was with my motorbike on a Tram line.
Scenario:-
There was a single lane road (uni-directional) and a tram line on the left.
The road was blocked with traffic and I had to take a left towards a shop besides tram line, unfortunately I took left turn upto 100 meter before the shop and was flagged down by police.
I was not give much chance to explain, I apologized too but they took my details and said that I will get notification by Zurich city Judge.
I am really worried, so far I haven't got any notification.
a) Do you guys have any experience like this in Zurich city?
b) Any idea how long it can take before I get the letter?
b) Have I committed a criminal offence that can reflect in my records?
Yes I have valid - A+B Licence issues in CH and I have valid insurance too.
What I noticed was that they had stopped 2 more motorcyclist in the 5 min span when I was there. Maybe other ppl were using this tram lane regularly (not sure), Maybe it was some special drive due to some complain as I have never seen a police near this shop in last 7 years I have been in this area.
I think depends on the line you crossed. Was it a solid line? I think in that case the police can decide if they will bring you in front of a judge or just fine you.
In Google maps I can see its dotted line as there are parking and shops on other side.
I will share the letter once I get it. Maybe it will state what henious crime did I do.
Atleast from above comments it looks like, riding on tram line is fined upto 140 chf but I have no clue why I have been subjected to the Judicial process.
My speed was hardly 30 kmph so there is definitely its not a speeding case.
Unlikely a traffic offence of this nature will end up on your record..there would need to be aggravating danger. You should still be pretty safe for you C-permit.
I see the police are taking more and more measures against motor cyclists here in Ticino and elsewhere. Just because they are on two wheels does not mean they can cross lines or enter bus lanes in order to pass traffic. They should wait in the traffic jam along with everyone else, and on one road into Lugano, at rush hour the police often have a field day stopping motor cyclists and fining them.
Notwithstanding the above, I doubt it will affect your permit application. If it did, we'd have virtually no C permit holders in Switzerland!
Finally! It is ridiculous how bikers overtake cars and everyone seems to be ok with that... especially at traffic lights. This is dangerous and absolutely mental --if I did that with my car, most other drivers would drag me out of the car from the window to teach me a lesson
Is it not dangerous driving at 15kph between a sidewalk and a bunch of stationary cars? Riders overtake on the right but also on the right (where you often have traffic islands or tram stops in ZH). And the same happens on highways when stuck in traffic jams.
Then what, buses and trucks and old cars should have priority in traffic jams because most drivers don’t want to sit behind polluting vehicles?
