Roadside attractions?

Hey Folks

In less than two weeks I will be going on a self-made US Road trip that will take me from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, Columbus, Indianapolis, Louisville, Charleston WV, Washington to Atlantic City and then back to Philadelphia.

I guess the speedway in Indy is one place to visit, also, Punxsutawney (home of Phil the groundhog).

Any other ideas, any attractions I don't want to miss along this route? Thanks, Tom

Gettysburg Battlefield, PA

Air and Space Museum, near Dulles Airport

Arlington National Cemetery

Smithsonian Museum, central DC

Annapolis and Chesapeake Bay area

Langley and Fort Meade

Be aware that the Smithsonian Museun is actually made up a lots of museums housed in lots of different buildings. Take you pick on a subject you like and visit e.g. natural history or Air & Space. It would take way too long to visit them all in the time you have.

If you're going Columbus- Indianapolis you must dip down to Cincinnati for some Graeter's Ice Cream. It's worth it. Then to kill the sugar buzz walk down to Skyline Chili, about a block away (Ludlow Ave. in the Clifton neighborhood). You can't do Ohio and miss those two things.

Then, if you're going to be doing Charleston W.VA to Washington, you might as well cruise through Richmond VA. That there is the weirdness capital of the South.

But definitely do Graeter's/Skyline (if you can't make it to Cincy they do exist in Columbus, but Columbus is a hole... )

Spend a day chillin' in Amish country (northern Indiana, central Ohio, southeast Pennsylvania.) If you're lucky you might get to try out your Swiss German on some Amish people - best to warn them first though, they don't expect to hear it from an 'englischer' and your accent may throw them. "Kann ee au mol deitsch shprecha?"

If you're on I-80 - and with that itinerary I reckon you might be - jump off at Dubois (western PA, pronounced Due-boyce) and eat in the Dutch Pantry. That's Dutch as in Deutsch, not Dutch as in Dutch...

Truck stops in Ohio are always good for horrible kitschy memorabilia - Elvis in a trucker's hat, portrait of Mr. and Mrs. Obama with rainbows and hearts round them, etc.

And the world's largest ball of paint is in central Indiana - if you're into that sort of thing.
