Hello there,
I am thinking about bringing my sailing boat along when I move with my family to Geneva this summer. So far the wishful thinking...
After a research on the forum here this seems to be a pretty futile undertaking. I am not bothering to post the links to various threads about the subject matter on this forum but it's pretty clear. (talking about 15y+ waiting lists, outrageous fees....)
Now what I couldn't figure out yet and my internet searches have been pretty fruitless: Is the situation still as hopeless as you move away from Geneva to the ports further towards (or even in) France? Is there a website where I can check about available places, rather than contacting each port individually? (or is the absence of such information on the web because there are simply no places on the "free market"?)
Appreciate any hints (positives or negatives).
Thanks
Christian
PS: It's an 18ft boat, if that makes any difference....
Honestly, forget it.
It's not just Geneva where you will have a hard time finding a mooring. All along the coast is impossible. Don't know about France, but I imagine people in have already thought of that option.
What will you do with the boat if you can't find a mooring?
Portalban on lake Neuchâtel has a large port, maybe moorings for 1'000 boats. The village rules are that available moorings are not allowed to be sold on, and must be given back to the village council: then the next person on the waiting list receives the offer of a mooring. You might want to join the waiting lists for moorings of all the towns around the lakes.

Thanks miniMia...
I was afraid that would be still be the answer...no worries though, the boat can stay where it is. It would just have been a nice to have for the weekends...
Guess a SUP board will have to do the trick then :-D
Yes! I SUP near Montreux!
Cool. How are the conditions? You're not windsurfing as well by any chance?
From what I have heard from someone who DID import her boat to ZH from Holland, finding a mooring is one hassle. Getting the boat through all the necessary regulatory loopholes with the required paperwork was a confrontation with Swiss bureaucracy in all its glory
Yes, bringing my boat from Denmark to CH was a nightmare Square 3, then although I have all the licenses and then some I couldn ́t go sailing without the lake license.
Now the boat is on the hard three kilometers from the f&§%*g Bodensee.
I'm a total beginner. Started last year. So I couldn't tell you good conditions from bad!
Lots of things to do on the lake(s) even without your own boat.
Worrying to hear this - what are the next steps for you? Did you look at mooring on the German side at all?
Awesome guys...
Guess I never heard so much collective negative feedback in my life Must be true then.
Well that's it with the boat then, I'll just buy some Speedos and swim instead
Just came across an ad for a boat slip in Coppet for rent. Go to glocals.com and search for "boat slip in Coppet" under Classifieds > Goods for sale. Hope it helps!
There's hundreds (well, literally dozens) of small and medium sized boats on trailers on my side of lake along rte de Lausanne.
At this time of year the boatyards have not put all the big/medium boats back in the lake. Many people keep their small boats on the hard standing as they cannot get a mooring.
Wow.
If Lake Geneva is like the Zürchersee and the Bodensee, you don't get a mooring place without a multi-year wait unless you can buy one with a boat. In which case the boat is usually way overpriced. Not here though I guess.
In Switzerland I had a boat and no water, now I have water, oh so much water and no frikking boat.
Seriously boating here is cheap as chips, a mooring will cost you 200 to 300 Euros and it ́s yours, like forever. Insurance is on par with a scooter. And don ́t wave your hard earned licenses about, people will just laugh.
Have to say a run over to Malta is on the cards for us one of these days.
I have a sailing boat in Geneva with a nice mooring space close to the Jet d'Eau. Beautiful location. Perfect for pottering around and having a drink on board with friends. Watching the fireworks from the lake in summer is also awesome...The problem is, I am often far from Geneva and cannot use it as often as I would like. :-( Thinking perhaps others would be able to enjoy it more?
You live in Basel and have a boat in Geneva.........
