It's going to be difficult this year. From around 4h in the morning until 9h at night.

Think of it as a test of one's resolve, besides one might actually get to slim down

Hubby needs it! I can't do it because of my health. But I do a kind of ramadan to support him and to test and improve myself.

The spousal support helps a lot. Kids, especially young ones, are spared - make sure they do not tempt the parents.

Smelly breath month is upon us Going to be a tuffy this year

Yep, but this is nothing, imagine next year if we get the very hot days we had this summer...

I know between the daylight hours Muslims are not allowed to eat or drink, does this include water?

Which is easier to deal with ? Hunger ( especially colder days ) or thirst ( warmer days ) ?

Yes it includes water as well.. but ramadan is only for the healthy and not for women who are pregnant, children, people who are sick or need to take medicines during the day, are travelling etc

yes no water. No smoking. No sex.

hmm Thirst is really tough.

Fasting also alterates your taste..the same dish taken during ramadan or normal days do not taste the same. From my experience, they taste better during ramadan.

No food, no drinks, no smoking, no sexe. Nothing in the mouth. If you take medicine, you shouldn't fast. If you need to go to the dentist, you have to skip that day, if a woman has her period, she can skip it and do the fasting later.

I can't handle the thirst, this is the worst!

Here is a BBC link for Advice on Diet:

There is much more in that link. Happy Fasting!

Thanks, I've been thinking of what I will prepared for hubby's breakfast. Something he just have to take from the fridge and already mostly prepared. At 4 am, you better not waking up too much if you want to be able to go back to bed.

Just wondering about this. I don't know who decided how long the fasting should last, so I assume it was the prophet. I can also only assume that to make things simpler, in those days where not everyone has a watch, he decided that fasting should be for half a day. Where he lived, the difference in the length of the day between december and june may not be as extreme. So what about people who live in Scotland for example? They fast for 7 hours in winter but 18 hours in summer? What if someone decides to fast for half a day time wise, i.e., 12 hours? Wouldn't this have been the intention anyway?

I also recall some story about a muslim astronaut a couple of years ago - he got some sort of ruling (can't remember what) because in orbit, he would experience something like 6 sunrises/sunsets within 24 hours.

There is a Word doc ( guidelines ) and this link that might help explain.

does the no smoking and no sex apply to the daytime hours like the no eating? Or is smoking and sex not allowed for the whole month?

You are not allowed to smoke or have sex during daytime hours like the no eating.... after opening the fast you are allowed Just that you need to take a shower if you have sex before starting your fast.
