SBB automatic low fares [EasyRide App]

The Local actually gave me news today! https://www.thelocal.ch/20191114/swi...kWfhtpyV6lqLOU

Kinda. Easyride has been operational since October last year, albeit in "preview" mode.

If you like the idea, check out Fairtiq. It's the original on which Easyride is based (in fact, Easyride uses Fairtiq's technology).

For those who plan ahead and benefit from Supersaver discounts, Easyride and Fairtiq are unfortunately of no use at all. Both apps calculate the fare at the time of the journey (obviously!), so discounts for purchasing in advance don't apply.

Even cheaper than to stamp Mehrfahrtenkarte/Tageswahlkarte?

Are you asking whether Supersaver fares are cheaper than multi-trip or day travel cards? Yes, much cheaper. Example: I'm travelling tomorrow from Basel to Zürich for CHF 5.20 on a Supersaver ticket. The normal Halbtax fare is CHF 17.-

Sometimes you get lucky and there are still good Supersaver fares available just an hour or two before the scheduled departure. The latest you can book a Supersaver ticket is one hour before departure. Be aware that Supersaver tickets can only be used on the precise service booked, i e. the time of travel and the route are fixed and cannot be changed. The tickets are also non-transferable and ticket inspectors can (and often do) ask for ID.

No, I meant the one from SBB App. They say they offer the cheapest option, but if to stamp a card is cheaper, than it's not the cheapest.

When does the charge appear for this new feature?

I used it this morning for the first time, took my usual bus from the village to the train station.. (where I renewed my abo)

Swiped to say i was starting my journey.. Swiped to end the journey.

Nothing has been billed to my card yet and I can see no record of the trip in the SBB app.

Easyride usually bills two days after the journey.

If you use the original Fairtiq app it bills the following day.

Remember it can't bill in real-time as it optimizes your fare for all trips taken that particular day. In other words it can't calculate the optimal cost until midnight.

Why the SBB Easyride app takes 24 hours longer to bill is a mystery.

Faretiq will send you an email/text after you swipe to finish your journey. It will show the rack rate. Subsequent journeys will also generate an email/text but those will be 'calculated' on all the journeys made to that point in time.

Bumping this thread for two reasons.

First, there was an add in 20 Min newspaper that if you use the EasyRide app between 18 Nov and 8 Dec you'll receive 2 x 10 CHF vouchers to be used later. The vouchers can't be used on EasyRide itself, but for example if you bought a Supersaver ticket I think it would work.

Deepl translate of the text:

Second, has anyone found that EasyRide or Fairtiq truly charges less than a typical journey? For example, my trip to work is normally 3 zones and I pay 3.70 CHF if I buy that ticket. If I stamp the multiple journey ticket, it "only" costs 3.33 CHF. Not a big savings, but who am I to complain.

I take the train, then a bus, then a tram to get to work. I often stop in the train station to grab lunch or a coffee on the way. If I understand the rules correctly, I would need to check in and out at each stop, particularly if I decide to pop into a shop. That seems like a lot of hassle and I'm not sure I'd save anything. Thoughts? If it helps I mostly travel on the Bern Libero network.

I‘ve found it good for traveling around Zürich on the tram when you make multiple journeys to fulfill one total journey. It calculates the fair for the full journey instead of a full price for each segment. If you know what I mean

So yes is the answer to your question.

Using the easyride feature requires certain privacy settings, eg you have to allow location, access to other personal data etc so if you want to use it for the first time don't try and swipe the start button five seconds before you board your train otherwise you could be fiddling with the settings and getting error messages when you should have a ticket

Does it know about your existing discount cards? for example, if I have a Zurich all zones pass and swipe in and out on a journey in Zurich it should not charge? or more realistically if during the journey I nip out of the ZVV area, eg Lachen it should sort me out with the best ticket in the Ostwind area?

You can load your cards in the settings. It will only know what you have added there.

All interesting but at the moment I'm going to stick to my normal SBB app. If I don't buy ahead of time, I can still just load the ticket before I board.

However, I can see how EasyRide can be easier if you're using multiple transport methods for one journey.

If I go into Geneva and then onto a bus or two I generally get a lower price than what I could buy at the machines. A City extension costs f4.10 while a normal ticket costs f2. If I choose three or more buses it charges me the extension rather than 3xf2. But if I just use two buses it charges me the lower 2xf2.

It does show next to the start button the halftax and zone pass linked to the same swisspass so it should take those into account.

But for longer journeys on the IR, usually you only get checked once, and they remember you, so what if you just stop EasyRide right after you get checked?

That too may change. And what you suggest is more serious than not having a valid ticket.

If I read the details correctly, the app requires you to allow motion tracking. Thus if you are still on a moving train and try to stop the trip, it might generate an error. I guess you could wait until the next station and when the train is stopped, stop the app and go into airplane mode to be sure it's shut down and not tracking.

If you're going to one destination and not changing trains or transport it might work, but otherwise the location tracking will show you got off the train 2 stops before town yet minutes later hopped on a tram in town.

Also don't be so sure you won't get checked multiple times. Last time I took the train to Geneva I was checked 3 times - twice between Bern and Fribourg by different inspectors and once between Fribourg and Geneva.

Still seems like a lot of fussing about to turn the app on and off if you need to take different forms of transport or if you want to try and cheat.

The alternative would have been much worse. Installing expensive readers on all Swiss rail coaches. With a few exceptions, like underground stations, the location tracking seems to work.

Yes, there will be cheaters, but hopefully it wont affect us honest people too much. Spot checkers on arrival checkers would be one way. Or perhaps change the process and check half the train on departure and then the other half before arrival.

One thing to remember especially if you are using ZVV area is that the lowest fare is given only until the end of the day (until 5 am next morning).

For example, consider the following journeys in Zurich and no travel before or after:

Day 1, 17:00 - Traveled 2 zones (110, 121) - Charge 3.4

Day 1, 21:00 - Traveled 2 zones (110, 121) - Charge 2.7 (10 % discount on day pass)

Day 2, 08:00 - Traveled 2 zones (110, 121) - Charge 3.4

Day 2, 11:00 - Traveled 2 zones (110, 121) - Charge 2.7

Day 2, 13:00 - Traveled 2 zones (110, 121) - Charge 0.0

If you already knew that you would do all these journeys you would be better off buying a Day pass for the 2 zones at 6.8 Chf instead of paying 12.2 Chf on easy ride.

I had thought that easy ride would charge me the lowest price always but the website says

"And at the end of the day, EasyRide calculates the lowest price"

They literally mean at the end of every day the calculation is completed.

I usually calculate the lowest possible ticket I need to buy and introduction of easyride made it even more complicated for me on
