The special one-day travel pass is back and is available even for those without a half-tax card. 55 CHF.

I wonder, when this price would make sense to anyone? When not having a half fare card? If we take say some long route like Basel to Lugano, it costs 46 CHF with the card, and mostly there’s no reason to go back as the trip is 3h

PS On the second thought maybe it does make sense to some..

The main target for this offer are one-day tourists without a half fare card. We use it whenever we get the chance with guests from abroad to do day trips to various locations.

The added advantage of this offer, compared to other options such as the commune card, regular discount tickets or even the half-fare day pass is that it’s not dated, so you can choose when to travel depending on things like weather for instance

It makes sense for everyone who plans to travel far. To buy a Saver Day Pass for a certain day for CHF 55 or cheaper a person with halbtax should buy it at least two weeks in advance if you travel on the weekday and a month beforehand if you travel on Friday or Saturday. The earliest Saturday with a Saver Day Pass under CHF 55 is September 26 (today is August 28). And the day of the travel is fixed, you cannot change it.

With this ticket you have a possibility to travel on any day you want until 28.10. It gives you flexibility and the price is attractive even with halbtax.

And the passenger name and birthdate isn’t required, like the municipal or saver day ticket. So it is truly transferable.

A destination isn’t required either.

Well a one way trip from where I live to ZĂĽrich airport is 65chf with halbtax - so I often use them for airport runs. If I ever need to do a day trip anywhere it is also most often cheaper.

I see, I see so there are (niche) use cases. Tourists without the card, ticket sharing and truly far round-trip destinations.

I find it attractive, buy one, and then do a nice day-trip somewhere on a nice sunny day

What do you mean 46 CHF with the card? Isn’t the whole point that you buy the card and then after that the train ride is free?

EDIT: I see, you mean if you already have a half card then a one-way ticket is cheaper.

OK, I guess a lot of travel is return which would then be cheaper with the special card.

I think it is useful for visitors who don’t have the half card. I took my parents on trips with it and you also can do things like some boat rides and cable cars which are included.

Not really niche at all, these offers are very popular and people who don’t use the train often and therefore don’t have a half fare card buy them and go for nice days out somewhere they wouldn’t otherwise go to.

I know lots of pensioners using these tickets for their day-trips, i.e. yes, going from Basel to Lugano, taking the boat around the lake (included), and then returning home on the same day. That’d easily cost upward of CHF100 buying regular tickets (with a half fare card!).

There’s also the issue of local transport. Zurich’s trams and buses for instance are included in the tageskarte, that alone costs ~10 on top of your 1-way ticket. Other areas might be less expensive, like ~5, but it’s still an additional cost.

I no longer go into ZĂĽrich regularly, so buying a yearly Halbtax - or traveling by OV for that matter - no longer makes sense, given where I go and what I do.

An offer like this might make me more likely to plan my next jaunt across Switzerland as a train trip rather than drive.

Halb tax also gives discount on many cable cars, also on quite expensive ones like Titlis.

Also you can buy a trial halbtax for 33.- for 2 months if you only need it for a certain period. I buy it for the relative, who flies to Zurich airport and goes directly to Austria and then goes back to the airport in a few weeks, and even for them person it saves a few francs.
