Scared of my mixer

Help! My handmixer released a pungent burning odor when I attempted to puree some fruits today. It is a relatively new mixer bought at FUST. The thing didn't let out sparks, smoke or anything of the sort, but could this be the sign of something wrong?

Yours,

Scared to puree

If you have still got the receipt you can take it back to the shop.

Thanks. I think that is precisely what I will do.

I had a friend tell me that similarly, her hand mixer also released a burning odor a few times, but that it has worked fine and never caught on fire or anything.

I don't know....maybe the thing will puree fine, but I'd prefer not to have my food smell like volcanic ash, you know?

We also have a hand mixer (I'm not sure of the make but it also cam efrom FUST) and that also smells sometimes when in use, but so far so good....

but does your food also end up tasting a little burnt? i tried the pureed apples afterwards and they tasted a little odd to me. then again, maybe it was the looming smell of burnt rubber in the air that was influencing my sense of taste.

I've had something similar happen with my blender and with my stand mixer, with heavy or unbalanced loads. I think it must be overheating a bit. I've always just turned it off, shifted the load around and gave it a minute or two and it was fine afterward. But if it's relatively new, you might want to return it.
