School Performance League Tables

Is there a performance league table for public schools in Switzerland - like in the UK?

If so where can I find it?

Cheers,

Nick

When we were trying to decide where to live and send our son to school I asked my Swiss friend this. She laughed at me saying there is no such thing and you just send your children to the local school.

If you were to ask a Swiss person this question they would probably say they didn`t need them as all Swiss schools are excellent. I wonder when the blinkers are going to come off.

The question is very good and valid. And the answers given are the correct ones but...

If you ask a Swiss person about the quality of the schools then you will find out which ones are good and which ones are not. Effectively if your children are going to the Gymnasium there is no problem they are all, more or less, good. The problem is that you need a good school before that to get them in. This is where local knowledge comes in.

Be aware though that you are likely to have to move to get the school of your choice as the norm is to go to the local school. If you send your children to an alternative there is likely to be a financial penalty ie you need to pay for the education. I know of someone who lived on the Aargau Zug border and half the town was in Zug the other in Aargau. The Zug part had a secondary school the Aargau lot needed to travel to Wohlen 15Km away instead of walking. They talked to the local director in Zug who said no problem send your kids to us. He never bothered to inform them about the 10K bill that they got 3 months later... They moved 1 km direction Zug and that was that.

So does anyone have advice on which areas the good schools are in on the Shil side of the lake?

Thanks

I agree totally with Richard. I spent weeks trying to find out about the best schools and initially was told that they are all good so just go to the local one.

In a way, this is exactly what the Swiss do, except that they are willing to pay extra to live in a nice neighbourhood and these tend to have the better schools. People here do also seem to take care choosing a good local school before they decide on a new flat.

But once the careful choice of flat is out of the way.... yes, just send the kids to the local school...!

Disclaimer: I've yet to see whether my careful planning has paid off. I'll let you know in january

So where have you decided to live?
