Hello everyone! We are an international family living in Barcelona and summer 2027 we are moving to Bellinzona for work. I’ve been reading that we should register our kid for school around January/February 2027, so I am trying to get a grasp of of any neighborhoods I should be looking at to register my little one for school. Any recommendations? Are all the schools pretty much the same?
We are grateful for any advise. Also, is there a Catalan community in Ticino?
You don’t register your child for school unless you are signing them up for private school.
You find somewhere to live, register with the local authorities as living there and the kids will be allocated a place a local school near to where you live. They won’t be registered in school until you have an address.
Exposing myself to the ire of the people from Ticino: Bellinzona is 1 neighborhood. A lovely and very small city in Alto Ticino.
Maybe…the question should be Bellinzona or any of the surrounding smaller villages? Some of these villages may not have a school or be entirely dependent on your car (no reliable public transport).
Thank you so much for the feedback. We wanted to make sure everything was set in place for them to start school in August or September with the rest of the class (as opposed to moving in the middle of the school year). So is it okay to find an apartment and register during the summer (June/July) and a spot would be given by the comune for the 2027 start of the school year?
That’s exactly what will happen.
If you arrive in June/July and register with the commune of the place you are living they will allocate a school place to your child for the new school year. It’s usually, but not always, the school closest to where you live.
Sorry I can’t help at all with your other question.
