came across this advertisement pamphlet in train about this coming Schwingfest in Frauenfeld. It seems to be quite a typical Swiss sport (or should I say wrestling?)
Big, big deal in my area. Two local schwingers are tagged as favorites to win.
I know people coming from America just for this event.
Tickets are hard to come by.
Switzerland does have a king: it's the Schwinger König.
Jörg Abderhalden has been the king in the past and many believe he will win this weekend again. However, he has suffered injuries and that will be his weakness.
I'll be following this on TV because it truly is a special event.
yeah...don't confuse schwinger with swinger. Apparently I was not the only one having my eye wide open as I saw this...
Am trying to gather more info on this event which only takes place every 3 year. Anyone here watched it before? It says we can see from the large screen outside the stadium and there would be a large festival going on...sounds interesting!
I was once a Kranzmeitli for a Schwinger. The schwinger knelt before me, I put a crown of ivy on his head, he stood up and we kissed in front of the spectators. All on a stage and to music. Each of the ten schwingers had a Kranzmeitli. Of course, this was at a Swiss Club in the United States where Schwingers are allowed to choose their own Kranzmeitlis. Here in Switzerland, the Kranzmeitlis are alloted and it's a more formal event.
Natasha: Here's a line you might want to use when flirting with a Swiss, "Looking for a Kranzmeitli?"
You really kissed him? I mean being Schwinger got such priviledge?...I thought they just...err...fight. What is the name of the ceremony actually? And is it before or after the match?
Kilian Wenger, 20 years old, is the new Schwingerkönig. He won every round, even against the standing Schwingerkönig, Jörg Abderhalden, and another tough competitor, Martin Grab.
My favorite, Martin Grab, was in the final round against Kilian Wenger. He lost and was consoled by his 5 small children (although one, who was devasted, needed consoling from Martin Grab). It was heartbreaking to watch.
It was an excellent Schwingfest and the winner certainly deserved the prestigious title.
Whenever there is the Eidgenössisches Schwingfest, all my female friends (typically well traveled urban chicks with a university degree) start lusting after Farmers... Quote: "I don't exactly want to marry one of them.."
The pic you posted is quite funny cause his facial expression is the one of a 16 year old who has to make a picture for his passport.
To understand Schwingen, here's a clip of a Swiss-American Schwingfest and its explanation. I've been to this annual Schwingfest many times and have always enjoyed myself... more so in the evening though.
And yes, I know quite a few of these people personally so don't be too harsh with your comments.
