Scotch Bonnets or Habaneros

Greetings all,

Am on the hunt for fresh Scotch Bonnets or Habanero peppers.

I make my own chilli sauce and so far have been making it with Thai bird chilies which also turns out spicy and flavourful. But now I think it's time to kick the spice up a notch.

Would anyone be kind enough to advise me on where these could be purchased?

Cheers

I have seen them in Globus on a couple of occasions, you could try some of the food stores down Langstrasse.

Good luck

I also make my own chilli sauces - Jelmoli Deli is my source, though I a also get a variety of chillis from small speciality shops around Zurich. Also, chillis freeze incredibly well and I have ten or eleven varieties in my freezer now.

In Basel there are two Chinese supermarkets and one Indian supermarket that stock them. I'm sure Zürich must have at least one ethnic place that does it.

btw - take one Scotch Bonnet. Cut into shreds (wear gloves). Put shreds into a vodka bottle. Shake vigourously every day for two weeks. Drink. Very very carefully. Goes well with fried, breaded whitebait.

Don't forget to install a fridge in the toilet to contain the toilet paper...

You could grow your own? We've just planted our own Habaneros and Scotch Bonnets, so I'm quite looking forward to a bumper crop in the summer

I seriously doubt you will get any heat from those. It's like some sort of supernatural law in Switzerland that nothing that spicy and flavorful is allowed to grow in this land. I've tried it before, and they ended up like tiny bell peppers.

Please tell us how it goes when you try them.

..alright...stepping outside of Hooters, turn right onto Langstrasse...look across the street for the next vegetable place..and that's where I stock up on spicyness...they even have some luke warm Dominican patties...hmm, maybe not the next best thing you want after Hooters..but in case of starvation, this will keep you afloat.

Well, I guess we now know what you've been up to.

I saw them on the Markauf across the border, they have different types of chillis. Not extremely cheap but well...

bah, who cares about chillies when you can just buy pure capsaicin crystals and make a sauce so potent it's very nearly a neurotoxin on its own

Hahaha ... from where I come, we say you're gonna be doing handstands in the shower!

How did you do this?

My girlfriend brought some seeds over from England, but you must be able to get them at a garden centre/online here. She bought some pots and compost and planted them last week. The pots are now in a tray, covered by cling film in our house. Apparently they need to be kept at a temp of 15-20 degrees at the moment. When they start to outgrow the pots and the weather improves they can be moved to bigger pots outside. Apparently now is the time to plant them.

We've never grown them from scratch before. Last year we bought some that had already started to grow. They turned out fine

I grow a range of chillis from seed and seedlings every year. I get seeds online from Thomson and Morgan in the UK. Seedlings can be bought from specialist garden centres but this is expensive, (e.g. Zulauf in Schinznach).

I sow indoors and transfer outdoors into warm spots in May. I mainly plant out directly into the ground but it's good to have some in pots that can then be brought inside in September to extend the growing season. Last year I lost most of my crop to a disease but previously I have had a couple of kg of chillis ranging from mild to toxic.

Most of the crop gets frozen. I've not bought chilis for years now.

Try your local Coop if it is a big one. Mine has started selling a mix bag of chillies including Scotch Bonnets & Habaneros.

My local Coop is tiny and doesn't have much. Could you tell me where your local Coop is?

Try the one at Sihl City. I'd forgotten all about that actually, as it's not so convenient now I've moved. It's not cheap though. I think I paid about 4 chuffs for 8 chillies of mixed strength, only two were of spicy interest - one habanero and one I can't remember.
