I moved 2 weeks ago from London, for a new job with a new company and living and working in Zug. My company has given me temporary furnished accommodation for three months which is great but I’m searching for a modern 3.5room flat with balcony and own washing machine in the centre of Zug or 10min Walk to main station.
Unfortunately there is nothing on the market in the centre of Zug.
Im checking Homegate.ch and I have a relocation agent but they’ve told me it is very difficult and I should just check every day. Work colleagues tell me
Prepare to pay 4-5k p.m. for it, even that would be very difficult given the constraint of 10 min from the train station.
I've been looking for almost a year in Zug, Cham, Baar, with budget 3k. Finally I decided Zürich would be the best long term option anyway so I'll be commuting to Zug. You can also look at the other side of Zug, for example Goldau for example.
Given the housing shortage, you have to be as flexible as possible. There simply are not enough nice, modern flats with amenities in a city center - and everyone wants one. Your competition will be fierce, and as a newly arrived Auslander you may find yourself pretty far down the totem pole.
Widen your area, consider anywhere within a reasonable commute ( or even longer by direct train), be ready to compromise on a flat that does not meet your criterion for age and amenities.
That's simply the way it is in this housing market.
Later, when you know Switzerland better, start looking for that dream flat. But for now concentrate on finding a roof over your head.
The above probably does not apply if you are looking in the ultra ultra luxury end, though. There are likely still places available if you can shell out serious cash.
Spent the day looking around, been to Zug, Baar, Horgen and Thalwil.
It rained all day but managed to see quite bit. Think it’s Zug centre was my favourite so far to live, work and socialising. If that doesn’t happen then I’m
considering Zürich. So I might take a look around Zürich too.
I will need to go to Rotkreutz for work 2x week and don’t plan to buy a car. I couldn’t work out why so many colleagues drive from
zurich to Rotkreutz but after todays trips I’m beginning to understand that while the public transport is reliable, it can be slower if you can’t get a direct connection and your travel time includes multiple connections.
Please consider the following: your budget, tax difference between different locations, commute and the social aspect.
I have been hunting for 3.5-4.5 apartment in Zug Kanton for 4 months now with no success. Yet what I did learn is that anything close to modern will set you back 4-5 kCHF/month. Rent of similar apartment in neighboring kantons would be 1.5-3k CHF/month.
However there is another angle looking costs and thats through the prism of taxes. Depending on your income level, it may make absoulte sense to overpay for the same apartment 2-3 kCHF/month if your tax savings compensate for it. Zug becomes very attractive if your annual income is above 300 kCHF per year.
Before settling to a place I strongly advise to take the trip during peak hours - morning and evening, just to experience what it may feel like to commute daily. I found Baar very well connected via highways, hence this has been my preference, but I do have plenty of colleagues using a train. Take into considerations not only commute to work, but also weekend trips, trips to airport etc.
When it comes to social aspect - it very much depend on your family situation. We found that small towns suits us best for daily living and we visit Zurich, Lucerne or other cities during weekedns for socializing.
Before you do that, please check whether the permit you have will allow you to live in a different canton from where you work. This will depend on your citizenship. EU/EFTA citizens can move freely from one canton to another, whereas non-EU/non-EFTA citizens need to get special permission from both cantons.
Thank you, yes I am a UK citizen so I will need to get permission but I understand that my employer supports this. I am going to try to focus on Zug. Are there any websites that show new appt building block complexes ?I think I would like something modern and with a nice view if possible. My temporary flat has this so I think Im lucky so far.
On newhome there are a few offers (mostly furnished) in in the area of 10 km around zug.
On comparis there are aroud 20 offers even starting around 2000 sfr per month.
There is one 32 m2 studio one room for around 2800 sfr per month (this is mayhem)
The employer might but whether the canton does is another matter as you take a permit from Zug contingent and then want to live (and pay taxes) in another canton.
What is the point for the canton, they lose a lucrative tax payer who could be you or somebody else.....
Hi! We are moving out from our apartment 4.5 rooms in December and looking for a ‘Nachmieter’. We are close to the station. Apartment is mordern. 4.2k with parking ( can be canceled).

You are right! The sbb app only shows me connections it thinks I will make so the time it takes with multiple connections is actually quite long. I think I will need to travel at least once a week to Basel and once a week to Rotkreutz and I think the centre of Zug is the perfect place if I can just find a flat.
Thank you, yes I was also wondering about this bit of administration. But speaking to work colleagues it seems straightforward. For now I am going to try to keep to Zug if I can. So this should not be an issue. But absolutely, yes I will see what I can find out from other colleagues who moved to Zürich. I suspect they were EU citizens and so it’s a little easier for them. #Brexit issues

Just to give an update, I am still looking for a 'permanent flat' as I am only in temporary accommodation at present. Someone posted on here but then never came back to me unfortunately so I've signed up to the main online portals here: Flatfox, Homegate and Immoscout. I am also keeping an eye on FB forums as there have been posts on there in the past, and I thought Id let EF forum members here know Im still searching.

I have a relocation agent (thanks to my new employer) but sadly they're not offering to do much as they think the market is saturated so they typically just offer to complete my application forms. So I'd appreciate any tips if anyone knows of any flats coming up in the next few months.
Your company is paying a relocation firm to find your housing and the agent isn't doing the job he or she is paid to do 'as they think the market is saturated'?
Seriously - I've run across less than effective agents before but this is a whole 'nutha level.
Make sure someone high up in your company, as well as the head of the department that handles relocations, knows that the agency is doing almost nothing for that (presumably large) fee they are charging.
This is simply unacceptable. I am almost certain that the relocation company's task, and what they are being paid for, is to find you a place to live as well as provide admin support.
If your expectations and budget can't be met, it is the relocation company's job to figure out a solution for you.
I get really angry when I hear this about relocation firms. My clients only paid when I found them a place to live. I suggest you have a chat with your employer and ask just exactly what the scope of the relocation company's contract is. Employers also want to know they are getting value for the services they are paying for.
As you can only stay in furnished housing provided by your employer for 3 months, the relocation company should be feeling some pressure. Temporary furnished housing is typically very expensive.
