Hello everyone!
I was searching through the forum but couldn't find the specific info re secondary (public) schools in Basel Stadt. I do understand that all public schools are on the same very high level but just wonder if there is any school you would particularly recommend from your experience?
We just moved from Ireland in January. My daughter is starting 6th grade now and still will be attending DaZ classes (for German language support) and presumably this will continue in secondary school (at least 1st grade) so we will be limited in terms of choosing the school as only schools with DaZ support classes will be offered, similar to what we had for primary school when we moved to Basel.
All your support is greatly appreciated!
You will go to the one who's catchment area you live in
Primary school assigned to both my kids was not the closest one to the are where we live.
There are also few secondary schools in our area and what I've heard from others, they are taking your personal preferences into account, as well. At least in Basel Stadt...
Apparently, you do get to chose in BS: https://www.volksschulen.bs.ch/schul…verfahren.html (sorry, it’s in German).
Just a few toughts, mostly anecdotal: Theobald Baerwart has an excellent headmaster. The school tries to be rather “progressive”. Sandgruben and Vogesen try to be progressive as well, AFAIK.
I know a few excellent teachers in Wasgenring, Vogesen and Bäumlihof.
I know a few horrible and a few excellent teachers in Drei Linden.
You can’t go horribly wrong with any of the schools, much will depend on the teachers. I’d chose a school not too far from where you live, with either good connections with public transport or relatively safe bike routes. Commuting to Wasgenring from i.e. somewhere near Riehen makes no sense.
If possible, talk to other parents in your kid’s class. Also, if your kid has a close friend/close friends, try to coordinate with their parents.
Thanks very much Dare for all the info, much appreciated!
Both my kind are attending St Johann Primarschule which is next to Vorgessen so it makes sense to attend that particular secondary school as most likely all kids from class will attend it.
Another option is De Wette and Leonhard sec. school which are approx. the same distance from where we live.
I've heard great things about De Wette and regarding to Vogessen, if staff are somewhat similar to St Johann we'd probably go with that one.
It all depends on the teachers and the student mix in the class. My daughter is in secondary school and we hear good and bad things from friends who go to her and different schools, there is no simple answer and no accessible school ratings.
Keep in mind that in BS, kids are streamed after 6th grade. Because of the German issue, your daughter might initially end up in a stream not corresponding to her abilities/desires. There does actually seem to be movement up/down between streams, which in your daughter's case would be a very good thing.
Yeah, I'm aware of that. During the last parent-teacher meeting we were told by the teachers that they expect from our daughter to show initiative toward german (to put in the notebook some new german words and to ask teacher what they mean), to be more active in i.e., sports as they don't want to assess her based on her German language knowledge considering that we just moved (as you already know they are doing assessment whether to put kids in A-, E- or P-Zug). I think that's fair.
