I currently live in Baden and I am looking for some hidden gems or secret spots to visit. I mean places that are not too well-known and tend to be less crowded. These places could be anything from an orchard or a vineyard with a view, to a specific spot in a village, etc. Just any perfect place to chill out.
So, if you have any recommendations anywhere in Switzerland that offer stunning scenery, I would greatly appreciate your suggestions.
My backyard, but hardly secret as it is one of the most visited Gorge/Dale in the country. But yes, it is a wonderful place indeed. I much prefer its little sister up the road, much wilder, much quieter- Les Gorges de la Poetta Raisse.
If you can go out of season, and on a week-day, Creux du Van can also feel wild and secret- but you need to pick the right time- and then on to Ferme Robert.
creux du van - ebike from Noiraigue and come back through Absinthe valley and the Absinthe museum and Mauler champagne
Camping at the Montreux Jazz fest . The camp site at Tour De La Paix is incredible, something like 12 CHF a night and the best view in Switzerland to wake up to. On the park and ride route so free transport in and out of the fest all night
Axalps airshow
Blend your own wine at Schloss Salenegg
Bike ride Geneva to Yvoire , stop for lunch, boat to Nyon and bike ride back in to Geneva
Horse racing in Aarau
White Turf in St Moritz
Caribana music festival in Nyon
The Slow Up events throughout the better weather seasons
Parliament Tour
I could have a think and probably come up with some more. Theres plenty to keep busy here
Watson.ch often publishes hikes to places that are a bit off the beaten path. Obviously not secret anymore… in German, but DeepL… https://www.watson.ch/Rauszeit/
On weekends, it’s harder to find solitary places, during the week, even spots that are crowded on weekends can be pretty solitary. Same thing with early morning/evening vs. noon/afteroon.
Everything a bit further away from a bus stop/parking lot/restaurant will see signitficantly less traffic.
During our hiking vacation last summer, among many other places, we discovered the Safiental and the Val Lumnezia , two relatively little-known valleys in Graubünden. No towns, just villages, beautiful landscapes, not overrun with tourists, good bus services.
Faffleralp - a bit busy near car-park and then if you walk a bit - no-one. Amazing wildflowers, sound of the river, small alpine lakes, huge graniet rock with lichen, glaciers ahead, golden eagles above - and the easiest high altitude alpine walk, as it is almost all on the flat.
After a week of visitors in the Innerschwyz, I’m going to add some more ideas:
Rigi Scheidegg: Rent an e-bike and ride up to Rigi Scheidegg from Goldau. Rigi tourism doesn’t really support biking so do it on off-peak times and avoid the paths between First - Kaltbad - Staffel.
Stoos! The views are stellar and the funicular is simply a master of engineering. If the weather is good, do the ridge hike, starting at Klingenstock. Otherwise take the chairlift up to Fronalpstock for views and a drink.
Visit the church and take a look at the plaque from the Californian Swiss.
Visit the lodge and the bar.
Walk around the village
Drive back from Stoos over the Suworow bridge that takes you to Oberschönenbuch. Drive slowly!
Having a rainy day? Go to Locarno/Ascona. The towns aren’t overrun and the path between the two towns offers a nice stroll.
Take the Rotenfluhbahn and consider hiking up the Mythen.
Kloster Einsiedeln: don’t forget to visit their horses in the stalls and take a look at the riding arena.
Just a few things to do if you happen to be in the area.
