There was recently a burglary attempt in our apartment block (they did not manage to break in), and I would like to change my old door lock to a very modern and very secure, difficult to break-in lock.
If you are renting you need to talk to your landlord.
Are you talking about the blocks front door, or the interior door to your apartment?
Physically? I wouldn't worry about the lock but the door hardware (surrounding hinges and frame). If they're willing to make noise and bring the big red key, the lock is not going to help.
It will only ever be secure as the weakest link .
How strong is your front door ?
In this case it would make more sense to replace the door with a new one with integrated rods that lock into the doorframe.
Anyway, this is something you need to talk to your landlord about. Otherwise you might be required to re-instate the door as it was rented to you when you moved in.
Once they are in through the front door, they can break through individual apartment doors at their leisure with little risk of being discovered.
However, if you have a door that is more difficult to break through than the other apartments then the burglars may chose theirs rather than yours!
You can replace your front door to one with a security rating. It might be cheaper and more secure to fit a security door in addition. This is actually common in Hong Kong. In front of each front door in an apartment is a metal security gate.
