Seeking a Gym in Basel - any tips ?

Hi I am staying in Basel between Messe Platz and Wettsteinplatz and I am looking for a gym to go too, possibly one where there are classes and they speak English. I did pop into one in Claraplatz but it is closed until the end of August. Any help or advice would be much appreciated. I prefer somewhere I can pay daily or monthly as I am not sure how long I will be hear. Thanks Jacki

Hi Jacki

I had a tour around fitnessplus in gundeli today & really liked it especially as they have a kinderhort for my 2 boys & they offer Les Mills classes.

I plan on signing up with them early next week so I can start to shed the baby weight! They are allowing me to pay in 3 installments & I think they also have day rates. It's also worth checking with your health insurance as Swica are paying 50% of my membership.

I can only go to the gym in the mornings (when the creche is open) but if you would like to join me then please send me a message.

Happy gym hunting!

Hi

There's a gym on Friedensgasse on the corner of Missionstrasse. I went there for 3 months over the winter as it was a bit cold for training outdoors. It is ran by a guy called Roberto. He seems a good guy and offers good advice.

The website is:

Fitnessplus is great, they do speak English and they are willing to do the classes in several languages if the audience is mixed.

To me it seems they charge everyone differently - depending on the person's negotiating skills.

There is a one off card fee, it is 30 CHF I had to pay 15 CHF (maybe others did not have to pay anything ).

Monthly fee is around 220, yearly subscription around 1200 - 1300.

The yearly abo can be suspended for an admin fee of 30 CHF.

I knew someone who wanted to sell her yearly abo but I don't know if it really works.

Thank you everyone I am going to go and look at Fitness plus tomorrow and see what my negotiating skills are like. I will keep you informed as I am sure they are not open today ! Happy Swiss National Day !

forum sport club near the hospital is ok and lots of classes included.

Hi Just to say I ended up joining City- Gesundheits Gym which is on Rebgasse 20 between Wettsteinplatz and Claraplatz. Thay where probably the most friendly, cleanist and easy to deal with. I managed to get a monthly membership for 170 chf and I can do as many classes etc as I want and use the gym during all opening times. They have lots of classes and they seemed the most varied , I did visit all other gym's in the end but this was the best for me. I had an hour's induction yesterday and then did 1 hr's pilates which was excellent, the instructor even did most of the class in English. Today I am off to Body Combat and Body Bump so hopefully the experience will be just as fun and good !

170 i pay 90 and thats all in with as many classes as I want!

Hi,

Try Colosseum Fitness (in Kleinhüningen)! The daily ticket is 17 CHF, the monthly is 95 CHF.

I haven't been there, but one of my classmate's son works there.

Well I've joined now Rob I did go check it out yesterday morning but the lady there was'nt very helpful and she said I could only do a year subscription, which is no good if I am only hear on a monthly basis. Im happy with City Gym been back again today and everyone is so friendly and helpful ! Most importantly to me is I feel comfortable in a new enviroment ..Personal Choice I guess.

oh! thats odd, they have no commitment subs which cost more than the 90 and u can cancell any time.

what did she look like? hope it wasnt a young woman with blonde hair

Sorry Rob can't remember exactly, she was young as another lady was asking her to speak to me..but her hair colour not sure ! Was tied up in pony ! Enjoy your gym !

hi sorry to hijack this thread a little but does anyone know whether you can bring in your kids to the pool at the migros gym in heewagee?

I am new to Basel (I moved here from Milano) and I am looking for a great gym in Basel. I was a member of Virgin Active in Milano, an upscale club with an international environment.

Is there such a club in Basel too? Thanks for your inputs. I miss my workouts at Virgin Active!!

no virgin gyms etc in basel, i suppose the closest you might get is migros park or the new fitness plus gym on dornacherstrasse

thanks Rob!

I might check out Migros Fitness. But some friends from work have told me that it is too crowded specially over lunchtime or in the evenings.

Since I work near the Aeschenplatz: What about John Valentine?

I was just looking at the City Gym today - it is right across the street so very convenient. Will need to do a bit more research. I was looking at yoga studios but they are 25 chf a class so a gym that provides yoga classes (like city does) makes a lot of sense.

the city gym looks quite interesting. unfortunately it is too far away from work for me.

I was visiting the John Valentine Club near Aeschenplatz today. Nothing for my taste: no daylight because the whole club is in the basement, the lockers room is not very nice and the whole environment looks kind of old. Also I asked if I could check out the club once for free and they told me that it is not possible. You have to pay to check the club out. I won't.

This afternoon a colleague told me about a newly opened club, just near John Valentine called Indigo Fitness. He is a member there. The website looks very promising. I will check the club out maybe on friday.

Does anyone here know Indigo already?

@Paul Jones

you will want to check out Indigo Fitness: http://www.indigofitness.ch/indigo/?L=1

The Radisson Blu hotel at Heuwagge (3 minutes walk from Indigo/JV) also has a newly kitted out gym and a pool. The cost is something like CHF370 for 3 months.

I have a friend who stays there 4 nights a week and he says it ́s very good and usually not so busy.
