Selling a car in proximity to the end of leasing

Hello

I have a car which is currently on leasing but the lease will end in about a month and a half. I figured that it is best for me to sell the car myself rather then returning it to the garage.

Assuming I find a buying before the end of the lease, would I still be able to sell the before the leasing ends?

What is the process? Does anyone have experience in such cases? Do I ask the garage to buy it before the end of the term?

I will be grateful for a good advice

The lease has to be fully paid off and the restriction on the grey card needs to be removed BEFORE you can sell the car

Don't put it in the garbage, it will cost a fortune in Zuri sacks

Good idea! Thanks for spotting it!😊😉

OK, so I gather from your answer that I can pay off the whole amount before the end of the lease and ask for the restriction to be immediately removed.

What if I find a buyer before the last lease payment? Is that deducted?

Not true, only before all is done.

We bought one, paid seller, he paid off lease, we have had said car for 9 years now.

Tom

As I said, we bought one while still on lease, he showed us his final payment (which was the purchase price), and we went from there. All cash in hand.

Tom

No, you pay all what is left on leasing - or give back the car . Interests usually are paid with first payment you do when leasing starts.

Often people overestimate what it takes to sell the car.

Thanks Tom. How did you guarantee that he indeed goes and pay the remaining amount to the garage? And what about the restriction on the grey card?

He won’t get the grey card before having fully paid off the lease.

I physically had the car, keys, a signed bill of sale, and a copy of the grey card. He mailed it to us the next day.

Tom

Great Tom, you know what you are doing but the OP doesn't seem to so she came to ask for advice about a secure way of selling her leased car.

Did you know the seller ? You had the keys, and if he had another key he hadn't given you ???

Copy of the grey card, nice but carries no weight

Signed bill of sale.......i hope it was on soft paper

Physical car, nice but not a lot of use without cancelled grey card

Money, you paid so you have to trust seller 100% to pay off leasing company and get grey card.

Need a lot of trust !!

Wow, i got a groan from Tom for the last post, Tom, you're just full of surprises today

I am not sure why you are considering selling the car if you can just give it back at the end of the lease. Do you want a car? Will you lease another car?

You probably have the option of buying the car at a specific price. If you do that then you are free to resell it. How easy will that be? Impossible to say. Can you make a profit? This is anyone's guess.

I would assume because he has paid for a higher mileage than he’s actually driven with the car, potentially making the expected sell price higher than the residual value.

The residual value of the car is significantly lower then market value. Second hand car prices have increased due to the shortage of chips and new car deliveries are delayed. So if you have a quality car, the current market conditions favors selling the car independently rather than giving it as a present to the car dealer.

Hmmm, pay the CHF 600 residual value and keep the car, or give them the car, tough choice. (NOT)

Tom

I've been doing this for years, if I don't want to keep the car I just pay the residual out myself if you have the funds of course. Then sell the car onto the buyer myself a few days later in the best case scenario.

I have found this less messy, and well worth the effort to make some extra cash back on the side.

A few months before, I figure out my price, make a little PDF add with good pictures etc. then make a point of mentioning it in passing to anyone and everyone I come in contact with, neighbours and such.

Usually, like just in October, I passed on my ex- leasing car the day after the payment was made to the garage to the new owner, without formally advertising.

Four out of three thus far, it was only the first time I tried it that it took me over 3 weeks to get rid of a car.

This is when I learnt to avoid advertising on the online car platforms whenever possible. Otherwise, you may expose yourself to the pestering of what you may call a 'car shark' it is rather annoying and unpleasant.

Interesting! My current lease expires in about 6 months. What, in your experience, is the best reference for used car values in Switzerland? I have a 2019 Audi Q3.
