Selling gold jewelry

Hi,

Where would be a good place to sell gold jewelry without having a dealer low ball you by 15% below the spot price?

I have some 18kt. cufflinks with small diamonds and 19th century gold US coins set in a round frame to sell. They weigh together 20g and the dealer offered me CHF 530. According to the site http://www.dendritics.com/scales/metal-calc.asp , we are looking at a scrap value of at least CHF 617 calculating the diamonds and the coins using the 18 ct. gold price. The diamonds are about 2.5 mm in diameter so I am guessing 0.05 carat. The gold coins are .900 gold, i.e. purer than 18ct.

Thanks for any input.

Scrap value 617 , offer 530 , gross profit 87 or around 15% ?

That isn't a bad offer, it's a fair price and a fair profit surely ?

Maybe I am missing something...

Pulling out an old thread, because I think it pertains most to my question without me starting another thread...

My wife and I have accumulated quite a bit of scrap gold and we want to clean house a bit...

Can anyone suggest good places in the greater Zurich area to sell scrap gold/unwanted gold jewelry? I'm looking for places where I'll get the best price with the least haggling. (obviously )

Is it better to sell this scrap gold in Switzerland, or would I be better off taking it with me to the US? (IMO, Switzerland is the better option, but I want reassurance)

Last, for jewelry with precious stones, specifically diamonds, does bringing provenance improve the offer I will get? I have IGI certificates for all gemstones, etc. and pay a premium for well-documented jewelry (don't want conflict stones and I don't always trust the jeweler to tell me everything...). Is it beneficial to bring the provenance with me, or will it make no difference?

Any thoughts would be great and thanks in advance!

I suggest you visit a few jewellers (most buy gold nowdays) and get quotes. For the stones specific quotes, and for the gold ask what "retention/return" they will give on the "fine weight".

You might be better of having the stones dismounted and selling them separately especially if they are really investment grade. Of keep them and have them integrated into more modern or to your taste pieces. You should be able to get the gold credited and just pay labour and any extra material.

To give you and idea, a small collector is getting about 95+pct return on the fine gold weight from a refiner or trade wholesale collector plus an assay and refining charge.

"Quite a bit" is not very specific, but until you are starting to count 100s of Grammes fine you remain small and can't negotiate too much.

To bring to the US you need to consider customs issues potentially. Ring around a few places on 47th St in NYC

Quite a bit is vague, because there are several small pieces, but in total would probably not amount to a large quantity weight-wise (ereabouts 100g total gold weight). Customs wouldn't be a concern, in that all the jewelry could be worn into the country, the dollar value of the jewelry is not so much as to attract attention, and the US was the country-of-purchase. I don't want to go to a lot of trouble dismounting stones, etc, and don't have specific ideas in mind for new jewelry, so I'd rather cash out for now and buy something else later.

Suggest then you just go for some quotes to a few jewellers. Steer clear of the places that go long on the "cash for gold" positioning.

Cool, thanks. Do you have any recommendations? Should I just troll the Bahnhofstrasse? Or is there a part of town that's better for this?

I had some gold I wanted to sell in Basel and the price they were ready to give me was a real joke. I kept it and waited when I went to Istanbul. Gold is such a huge value and market there, it was trully worth to go.

I had an old ex engagement ring I also wanted to sell and for this one, I went back to the person who made it in Canada. Since it came from him, I had the best quote on the diamond compared to what others where ready to give for it even with the papers of the diamond.

This guy buys gold and I saw people pulling out loads of old stuff when I went to buy a ring..

Not sure about his prices but he's a man/wife outfit and not the happiest of guys to deal with. I got a fair price on the ring.

No not the Bahnhofstrasse, more like mid tier local jewelles, but this place is offering 90percent payout. That's a fair price for a one off counter sale I think

How do the jewellers treat you if you walk in and ask them if they want ro buy your old wedding and engagement rings? Im never going to wear them again, and nobody wants them in my family.

Is that usual for them or they really pity you?

Since i dont speak french, im going to try and sell them in Holland.

They check the purity, they weight them, they make a calculation based on price of gold, minus thier commission, usualy about 15%.

They have no interest whatsoever, gold is a commodity and unless it is a valuable piece by a well known manufacturer, it all goes into a common smelting pot, end of story.
