thank you
Its coming up to winter and my thoughts turn to restocking my marmalade shelf. We live in Basel Land. Any suggestions for where I can find Seville oranges nearby? I've never seen them in the usual local supermarkets.
I ordered mine from my local Refomhaus.
If anyone sees some in Zurich a post would be very welcome :-)
They only appear for a short time in Coop & Migros, I think you had better order them!
Bitter oranges (Seville and Italian) can be found at the markets in Zürich during the February-March time frame...I've never seen them in Coop or Migros.
Look in Bern, but only for about 6 days in early March.
If you can't get Seville oranges I wonder if you can get kumquats? I've never made marmalade before (to be honest, I don't love the bitterness of it), BUT, I had an over abundance of kumquats and made a super yummy marmalade out of them.
Yes. It's is funny. I was going to write the spanish name, kinoto. But I thought. "For crying out loud, I'm an adult!". LOL. But I did giggle as I wrote it.
As any fule kno, Seville oranges are expensive because they're all snapped up by the marmalade industry. They only appear in the markets for a short time after Christmas - sometimes only for a few weeks - as they need a touch of frost before they're good. You're not likely to find good ones beforehand as they'd be out of season.
Stockpile on site, make marmalade, thump chest in victory.
Have you been in my kitchen?
Did you make the marmalade?
This year I made another batch which wasn't as good. The first was kumquat & lemonquat. This year no lemonquats so the marmalade wasn't as tasty. It sat in the fridge till I threw it out.
