Thanks, I thought it might derive from Leute but then I found that in Switz people use a verb (luten?) other than rufen (for "to call") so I thought it might be linked to that.
the Swiss word 'lüüte' meaning 'to call' is related to the German verb Läuten (to ring) - so they're literally saying 'give him a ring'...but bi de lüt is as mentioned above - "among the people"
