Shopping in bulk?

I've heard a rumor that there is some sort of wholesale store in Zurich, something akin to Costco or Sams Club in the States. Anyone know more about this? I've not found anything online, but I'd sure like to be able to buy my walnuts in something bigger than a 2 ounce bag! (I cook a lot... ) Cheers, Erin

We have an Aligro store in Geneva not sure about Zurich. Check out if it is there in Zurich . It is meant for bulk shopping like for restaurant owners etc. I save on drinks, frozen veggies, potatoes , onions etc. over there.

There are several Cash-and-Carry chains which I suspect is what you have heard about.

The require that you have your own business as a restaurant or similar or that you are a Verein if I remember correctly.

I've shopped there but wasn't to impressed with the prices. Many times, offers from Migros or Coop were better.

A Verein isn't enough, it has to be a business.

A good part of Prodega's offers are brand products, especially these often can't compete with the retailer's alternatives in price.

Edit: But it is worth to ask around if somebody among your friends is a member because they can take one nonmember with them on each shopping trip.

We have an account at TopCC, they don't seem bothered by minimum monthly purchases like another C&C. But you do still have to have your own business.

It is at TopCC - I'm a member of a small Verein that has a couple of cards...

Not sure where in Zurich you live. My husband and I live in Baden and we often go to Famila in Walshut in Germany (about 20 min north from Baden). There you can find a huge selection of grocery and family-sized packages.

Even with the appreciating Euro, we've still found pricing in general to be much better than those at Migro or Co-Op. In addition, depending on the items you buy, you can get a VAT rebate of apprx. 15% of your total purchase.

They do larger packs/sizes and it’s free to become a member.

Aligro (in Schlieren, Spreitenbach and possibly others) do indeed do bulk, but be aware that the prices are not necessarily much, if at all, cheaper than supermarkets. While a membership card is free, it doesn't entitle you to the discounts that commercial members get.

I’ve found Ailgro prices are similar to the specials that Migros and Coop do. And if you are a member and shop on Saturdays (maybe also Fridays) if you spend over CHF100 then you get stuff at the lower prices.
