Husband has just informed me that this weekends shopping trip to Lyon is cancelled as we have to go to Zurich and a large border crossing near Zurich. He has urgent business to attend to.
To prevent his decision ending in an early divorce I am hoping to somewhat combine our agendas and fit in a shopping trip in Germany instead of Lyon.
I have had a look at the map and Waldshut appears to be the closest large town. So what is it like for shopping? My google searches don't give away too much information. I am looking to purchase kiddies toys and maybe a Maclaren stroller too.
Anybody shopped in Waldshut? Otherwise where else should we head for?
We will be coming from Lausanne so i don't want to head too far into Germany. And tips from the locals would be much appreciated.
Waldshut is not really a shopping destination, I was pretty disappointed going there recently. It's a nice town but it is not very good shops wise. Konstanz is the much better (but also further away from you) option.
Waldshut is not that good, like said Konstanz is bigger, maybe Singen is closer for you, Singen has some nice shops (Karlstadt, H&M, Heikorn and smaller boutiques)
However, if all you want is cheap grocery shopping - and nothing else - Waldshut is alright. Closer than Constance and there are 3 large supermarkets which are open til late (10pm?) allowing you to travel there and back with Gleis7 if you're based in Zurich.
So I delayed going to Waldshut for quite a while because of this thread. Went last week finally. What a great little town!!! I have been to Konstance a few times for shopping and dining and while Waldshut is smaller it has everything that Konstance does only in a smaller and more convenient package. Excellent town center with lots of shops, bars and restaurants and a nice little farmers market on Saturdays. Found great Greek Souvlaki pita accidentally in a nice pub in one of the alleys too.
All the big Grocery stores are just near the train station so its very easy to spend the morning down town shopping for clothes, shoes, sporting good, kitchen stuff, art stuff, etc, have a nice lunch and a beer in one of the many restaurants or pubs then hit the Grocery Store just before getting on the train.
Bottom line here is not to believe everything you read. Get out and explore!
Warning to anyone planning shopping in Waldshut this weekend:
the crossing Koblenz CH / Waldhut DE is totally closed this weekend due to bridge works. You can cross at Bad Zurzach or Laufenburg instead, but expect higher traffic volumes and some delays.
The Mobel Brotz operation is the high end with Karl Benz etc..... and then Mega Mobel is their lower end (think faux leather sofas with shiny chrome legs and MDF cupboards)
the other furmiture shop could be Seitz, a colleague recommended it. more expensive and smaller than Dogern, though. I think we'll visit both and then stroll around waldhut, my colleagues all love shopping there, so I'm curious :-)
We bought our kitchen from Seipp.... and were very pleased with the service. We were assigned Martin Seipp , who has excellent English and was very attentive throughout. After some of the mediocre service received at the chain stores (e.g. Wohnwelt, Dick Kuchen, Plana etc..) it was a breath of fresh air to be dealing with a real family run firm.
I wish more of these furniture stores actually showed their products on their websites. Even a catalog via .pdf would be nice. So often I go to check out a furniture store and find it has all the same furniture as everywhere else -- ugly, plastic-ish lacquer tables and sofas that look like they just came out of an episode of Miami Vice.
I like contemporary furniture, but a lot of the stuff here looks like it was designed in the 80s.
