Short-term Mobile Internet - advice wanted

Hi,

we are in the midst of moving house and we need to maintain our current internet connection (Swisscom ADSL) but also have the internet at our new apartment for a couple of weeks...

Anyone got a recommendation ? I don't really want to set up two accounts, so I was thinking maybe a mobile internet would see us through the transition...that and I don't really want to have to wait for Swisscom in between...

Hope that makes sense ?

Swisscom have Pay-As-You-Go mobile broadband.

It works well for light use like reading emails and general surfing as long as you live in an area with good 3G reception.

You'll need to buy a USB dongle but you can get that at a swisscom outlet too.

I have a similar problem, as I am planning to bring my laptop with me this summer. Best I have found is the combination of Mobile Unlimited USB modem with NATEL®data easy .

NATEL®data easy can get very expensive quickly, but my plan is to use it for light surfing (email, forums with images turned off) six days a week, and do heavy duty work (uploading photographs ... not really sure how heavy) on the seventh day. Note that there is a maximum cost of CHF 7.5 per day.

One thing I like about it is that there is no clock, so if you are not transmitting data there is no need to disconnect.

Would love to hear about other options.

One thing that worked for me was asking a neighbor to share their wireless network for a month with me and I paid them money.

Swisscom PAYG is capped at CHF 5 per day with no download limit.

So once you reach the cap level, you can continue downloading as much as you like with no additional cost.

I don't use mine every day but if I switch it on that day then I just leave it on for the rest of the day.

If you're using it in a laptop then you also have internet when you're out and about - in the coffeeshop, train, park, etc.

I have been monitoring my network use, and the results are rather frightening. Using netstat -e I find myself using close to a megabyte just looking at the home page of a newspaper and clicking on a couple of stories. Makes sense, given how media-intensive most news sites are these days.

Hi,

I was using Swisscom Easy BeFree - 4 CHF/day, up to 2 GB per month, then they can slower Your speed. I was quite satisfied with the service, but would prefer to pay less of course :-)

I'd check the coverage first, if You don't have I-HSPA (3,5G) from Swisscom at Your place see if other providers have it.

If transfer is a problem, You can buy two cards and switch them every other day.

Regards,

Marcin

Problem solved!

A forum friend loaned us a wireless Sunrise for ...a few weeks....

I gather it costs 50chf a month...it was really handy, no problems with software (pre-loaded on the stick) and the speed was enough for internet browsing (but not quite video) and email etc.

Of course, only one user at a time, but swapping it from one device to another wasn't a problem...

Thanks jrspet for the loaner...we really appreciated it...now I owe you one!

Though we have never met jrspet also loaned me his Sunrise stick for my whole stay in Switzerland ... he does not seem to be getting much use out of it himself A very big
