The pharmacist has prescribed 'Perenterol' for my 10 month old baby who has diarrhea. Has anyone else given this medication to their baby?
The leaflet about Perenterol is in French so I can't read if they are suitable for young babies and I read on the internet that they are not suitable for children under 2 years of age.
Just want to check before I give him any.
She also suplied 'Elotrans' which I have given him as he is not eating any food and i'm worried that he will dehydrate.
Please, if you are worried about a sick baby, do not ask a Forum, but, please, go to your doctor. Please.
I've checked Perenterol on line for you and it says clearly that it can be given to young babies at the same dosage as adults. But it also clearly says that with young babies they can dehydrate very fast and that it is important to see a doctor asap.
Perenterol is an equivalent of Bioflorin. It's live friendly bacteria to help intestines cope with diarrhea, due to a bug or antibiotics.
My daughter (11mo) is currently taking twice a day as her prescribed antibiotics give her severe diarrhea. It was recommended by her pediatrician.
But if your child has severe diarrhea, be extremely careful of the dehydration risk. It can happen very quickly in a baby. If your child doesn't pee for several hours, has a dry mouth or is generally reckless, sick medical help ASAP!
He doesn't have severe diarrhea (Since yesterday evening he has had four episodes.) His temperature is stable around 37.7. He is drinking his formula feed which is good and cooled boiled water during the day. He tends to sleep alot and is generally not himself. He won't eat any solids although this morning he ate some porridge which I was happy to see.
Good - so no temperature, and taking liquids, so maybe no need to rush to the doctor just yet. Elotrans is a mineral salt replacement, which does contain flour so is quite filling.
Are you breastfeeding ? If so, you can continue breastfeeding as much as possible, and not use the rehydration fluid. But if you are formula-feeding then you need doctor's advice on whether to continue the formula, or use the rehydration liquid, or go to hospital and get IV fluids.
To be VERY HONEST, I think your pharmacist is irresponsible to prescribe these medications without you seeing the doctor first.... for a baby so young...
If your bubs lips look dry, or urine is turning yellow, or they seem not very conscious or aware of what's going around them, I would suggest going straight to the kids hospital.
I'm not going to give any more advice. You need to speak to your doctor.
We also used it for our son when he was younger but he was a little bit older than your baby. He was 18 months at the time and was hospitalised after contracting rotavirus from a friend's son and becoming seriously dehydrated. (he was so bad that he couldn't even keep water down). They gave it to us at the hospital to help restore the gut's 'good bacteria' levels. He didn't like the taste so they put it in with water flavoured with one of the grenadine sirops. He refused to drink grenadine for a couple of years afterwards.
As others have said the most important thing is to keep him hydrated but if he is maanaging to keep milk and water down, no longer has diarrhoea and seems to be peeing normally he should be fine.
You could always give your doctor a call explaining the situation and they can advise you as to the best thing to do.
Sounds pretty mild... I know that it's very distressing the first few times your child is sick, but after 3 kids I would personnally not be too fussed about the symtoms you described. Agree with the thoughts on need to monitor for dehydration.
it's a little late to reply now and i hope your baby is fine again.
Just some general comments: pharmacist here in Switzerland are very well trained. As a MD, I tell parents that within the first 24 hours of diarrhoea on its own in a baby about 1 year old, not together with vomiting, and with no signs of dehydration, as then diarrhoea can occur much faster, perenterol is a good idea. However, urgency of treatment depends on your baby's age and condition. As many posts correctly state, babies can dehydrate extremely fast. You only mentioned that he had diarrhoea, so it sounds as if he wasn't dehydrated yet. Whether and when you see your doctor also depends on your confidence and your experience, so you will feel a lot more confident with every "health or sick" experience you go through. If in doubt, you should always see your doctor.
I see you are located in Zurich. I offer First Aid on Children courses for parents in english in the Zurich area. Diarrhoea and vomiting are part of those courses. Please feel free to contact me if you feel that is something you might be interested in.
Pharmacists here are trained, however, just check it was a pharmacists (usually there is only one in a pharmacy and is responsible for the shop), at least in my area, all the rest are either in training, apprentices, or lower grade pharmacy workers than a licensed pharmacist. So, I wouldn't fret over a pharmacist giving some very mild, bifidus, some lactobacilus stuff to a kiddo, since I used it for my child, she was a tad older, and it worked well. It is just to support the baby's natural gut processes, it does not contain anything crazy. It is given with ATBs, after a stomach flu, or gut irritation after a food poisoning, etc. Normal yoghurt will do the same, but 10mo old baby might not support yoghurt just yet so well, mine didn't. Good luck, and no stress. It's just dried gut flora.
Thanks so much for everyones advice and helping me understand the medication. I greatly appreciate it. It's so hard when your away from home and you don't speak the native language when your child is ill so I'm getting myself german lessons asap!
I was in such a panic but thankfully my little man is all well again. He was suffering badly with his teeth aswell and also got a rash on his face. PANIC!! The doctor told me the rash was due to an allergy and we got drops in the pharmacist which seemed to have worked.
It's a very scary time for a mother the first time your kid is sick. Tears and all!!! The main reason I went to the pharmacist and not the doctor was because his temperature was normal and diarrhea was not severe. Although a first time mother I've looked after kids all my life and having seven siblings i'm well used to seeing sick babies. It was his restlessness which worried me the most.
Thanks to this forum you all helped me so much. Thanks a million. Big hugs to all. xxx
Be strong! - first time parents always find it stressful when their kids get sick (papis as well as mamis!). I remember it well, and my wife and I have often commented on how bad we have gotten as parents because we don't "care" as much with our second child. Not true! but we have noticed that the second time around we know better what is serious and what is just a case of the sniffles.
Ailish, you are sweet,no need to explain panic. That's completely normal.I should explain why I text like an illiterate, the cell and my fingers don't gel.
Hey,I am happy your baby is well again.. One more thing, when my kiddo was teething, she had routinely diarrhea, big read patches on her cheeks, and sometimes fever, thrash. The immune system is usually temporarily weakened,so bugs are wuth some kids completely normal. Then all gets well again.
