Skiing in Switzerland

Hi guys

I am looking to go skiing in February in Switzerland, however not really familiar.

I am looking for a mix of free ride and nice long slopes.

I was thinking Saas Fe.

Thanks in advance.

Have fun.

not really a suggestion, nor opinion....

It's not clear what you're asking for, There are dozens of places that could meet your rather vague requirements, or do yo ujust want opinions on Saas Fee?

If you are living in Lausanne- there are about 100 resorts closer to you than Saas Fee though. Just depends what you are looking for, your ability, taste, budget, and so much more. The 4 Vallées, with Verbier, Haute-Nendaz, Super Nendaz (Siviez) Veysonnaz/Thyon 2000 is by far the nearest very large resort, but the are dozens nearer and cheaper and less crowded- and depends on your dates in Feb too. UK half term is 13th to 20th- prices will be much higher and the Verbier will be crowded. But you also have Leysin, Torgon for access to the Portes du Soleil massive area, Les Marécottes, off the beaten track, Nax and Arolla, Crans Montana, Vercorin, Ovronnaz (+spa) Leukerbad (+spa), Zermatt- the list is endless.

Verbier or Zermat. The best.

I really like Verbier, but don't care if I never spend another day in Zermatt. I just don't like the attitude. If the OP is really into free riding then Chamonix is worth a look, it's open this weekend & I will be there.

Agreed, Chamonix is superb. Morzine and Avoriaz also solid options. St Gervais is so beautiful with the tree lined runs. Flaine is amazing for long, wide, rolling pistes.

But of course, these are French options.

Flaine has some amazing off piste, however beware of the holes.....

Flaine, Avoriaz & Chamonix are only an hour from Geneva, so much quicker to reach than Verbier or Zermatt if you start from Geneva.

Have you thought about Lenzerheide? Although it's not as big as the alps on the French side there are still plenty of options for you. The free-riding here is great and unless you come during peak times or a weekend you can usually have to place to yourself. Pleanty of on-piste options to keep you entertained for a holiday or two.

There are also plenty of hotels to suit different budgets.

If you need either an opinion or a suggestion let me send you an applicable link .

From Lausanne, Laax is a long way away- however good it is.

Will you have a car or depend on public transport. The Swiss entry to Portes du Soleil is very close to Lausanne, train to Aigle, the bus up to Vionnaz and Torgon, or (must check if bus goes via there) even better, to Plan de Croix just before Torgon- and then you have a quad chair up to Tour de Don and then pomas all the way to Châtel and super Châtel- or t-bar from Plan de Croix up to the great restaurant and wide rusn down to Chapelle- d'Abondance. From Châtel you can ski down to Morgins and up to Folieuse and Champoussin (got to cross Morgins on foot or bus) and then get across to Les Crosets, then all the way to Avoriaz and back again- that should keep you busy for a few days.

Checked- if you want to start at Plan de Croix (which has a restaurant, ticket office and large car-park) by public transport, you have to go to Torgon/La Jorette and then take the shuttle to Plan de Croix. Otherwise take the long chairlift at La Jorette, and the piste down the back to Plan de Croix.

En hiver navette Jorette – Plan de Croix

Great week had with the family and grandchildren in Thyon 2000- 4 Vallées. Great snow, fabulous weather and amazing luxury châlet for the 12 of us.

Perhaps my last ever ski week with them (knee replacement in 1 month) - but was able to ski the reds all week so feel very pleased with myself. Skiing is indeed much easier than walking when you know what you are doing. Hurrah.

Surely that will renew you ski career

Very old injury (45 years ago= and atrophy of tendons, etc- and the surgeon says it is unlikely I will ever ski again - but then he didn't believe I was going to ski all week this week- so hopefully will prove him wrong again...his comment was 'surely you can't ski on THAT!' - I only skied the reds- no bumps and on grat snow- big carbing turns and strings of lovely short turns- loved it. I surprised myself- and the family were amazed- great.

as my knee is permanently bent, and likely to remain so- perfect position for skiing

Verbier for sure

Love the skiing in 4 Vallées - but far too many Brits and Hooray Henries in Verbier itself for my liking- and ridiculous prices. Much better to head for one of the other 3 Vallées (Nendaz, Veysonnaz of Thyon).

A great deal depends on the type of skiing you want to do, lots of paths & very easy skiing to connect & drag lifts once you leave Verbier. Accessibility for day skiing is another point.

If you know the terrain and the combo of lifts- going from Veysonnaz to Siviez to access Tortin, Plan du Fou, Verbier and Col des Gentiannes/Mont Fort is easy peasy.
