Skype for iPhone, finally making calls over 3G!

Finally !! After a real long wait, Skype for the iPhone now allows Skype-Skype calls over the 3G network ( it was only allowed through a WiFi connection in the past).

They claim this service would be free until at least this August, after which a "small" monthly fee would be required.

Enjoy "Skyping"

You haven't jailbroken you're phone yet? You been able to do this for years...

Links..? I searched Skype's website and only came up with the following:

Well, not everyone JB their phone, but cool that you could do it since long time already.

Well, you should already find the update on your iPhone's Appstore(Switzerland), update your Skype, make a test call over the 3G, it should work.

You don't have to jailbreak your I-Phone to make skype calls... you can also login to skype using Fring and the calls work just like that

Happy Skyping!

Sounds like a mainstream technology for Iphone users. But i have been doing this a while back with my N95 (first edition) using Fring and VoiceCheap. And.. its free no monthly fees like what iphone is planning to do. LOL!

Whats the iphone got to do with it? Skype is bringing in the monthly fees

Care to share with us some source links to support this claim..? I don't see how Apple would be able to charge a monthly fee for users of Skype.

can anyone shed any approx light on data usage by skype ? so if im on 1gb a month for example, and I want to do skype where im in 3g areas then what kb approx am i chewing up of my tariff over say a 10 minute call. i.e the question really is, could i use my skype and then end up with a whopper of a bill because ive honked down 5gb of data usage in skype voice calls ?

thanks

mike

I dont have any links. but check Fring's website for more info. I was able to make fring to fring calls for free using my T-Mobile Unlimited contract sim. I can also make a voip calls using Fring to a UK landline but for this you need SIP hence i mentioned VoiceCheap.

Excellent question, my natel account is through my employer's network with an included 250mb data option. I hardly use 50mb a month but I wouldn't want to start chatting away using Skype only to get an expensive surprise at the end of the month.

Whats Fring got to do with Skype prices on an iPhone..??

One more thing, does your provider issue you a detailed bill ( exact data usage in Kilobytes and timing)? If yes, then maybe one can make a skype call at a specific time and note it down, also note how long exactly the call took, then check how much the charge was in the bill at that specific time? no?

That can be easily accomplished on the fly by sending a free SMS inquiry with the word STATUS to 444
