I am a Swiss citizen living in Aargau and organise the independent petition “Rauchfreie SBB-Bahnhöfe – für alle”. It asks the Federal Assembly and Federal Council for a comprehensive smoking and vaping ban across SBB station premises, including outdoor platforms, with effective enforcement.
I value public transport and want everyone to use it without avoidable exposure to tobacco smoke, particularly children and people with asthma.
My concern is that smoke can drift beyond designated areas, while passengers waiting or boarding cannot always move away. The petition also addresses cigarette-butt litter on platforms and tracks.
This proposal concerns shared station premises—not a general outdoor smoking ban. It is an independent citizens’ initiative, with no commercial purpose.
Please read the petition and its supporting sources. If you agree with its aims, a signature or share would be appreciated.
Thank you to everyone who has signed or offered constructive suggestions.
Bowlie and omtatsat, I agree that protection should extend beyond SBB to other railway operators and bus and tram stops. SBB stations are the current starting point, and I remain open to a broader approach.
On political impact, signatures alone will not change the rules. Alongside the petition, I have contacted public authorities, transport bodies, health organisations and elected representatives. The aim is to connect public support with a concrete, evidence-based proposal that decision-makers can assess.
I have also published a short evidence brief in German, French and English, intended to inform politicians and other decision-makers. It covers the health evidence, its limitations, and questions about responsibility and enforcement. The brief is available in the petition’s latest update.
If you support this aim, please consider contacting your elected representatives yourself, sharing the brief and asking what concrete steps they would support. Respectful, evidence-based messages from concerned passengers can help build public pressure for the issue to be considered.
Thank you for your support and for helping bring attention to this issue.
