I've got a small kitchen garden where I've planted some kales and Swiss chard, problem is the snails are quite attracted to them. I can't keep them out. Anyone knows what I can use other than the blue stuff?
are they in your cornrows as well?
you can use nematodes but the best way is to crush them at night and to encourage birds to eat them. good luck!
Have a look at these threads for starters:
How do deal with slugs in the garden?
Garden Slugs...why, where, how?
(And welcome to the forum )
@midfield thanks tonight I will not sleep ( snail hunting)! Thanks a lot Textoch.
It sounds nasty, but best to crunch them! Good luck!
Firstly get some ducks, great for keeping the snails, but mabe your garden is too small!
or you can bury beer bottles with neck up and a bit of beer inside works also
Hope this helps
Yes. I have solved this problem by buying a "Schneckenzaun" (slug fence). They sell them at Landi. No slugs or snails can cross this thing, my abundant veg patch is testament to this. It is made of sheet metal, and the lip has a sharp edge that slugs cannot climb over. This is by far the most effective solution I have found during 5 years of trying many other alternatives:
I tried the beer thing* and managed to catch a few of them. But what I've found to work the best is to use those anti-slug pellets (sold in OBI, Coop Bau & Hobby, etc.) that you just sprinkle around the plants. Or if you want to go more natural, I guess corn meal works really well for that, too.
* The beer thing: Put an empty glass in the ground, so that the top of it is level with the ground. Fill it 3/4ths full with beer. Next morning, check it, and there will probably be a few dead slugs in it. Apparently, they love beer but drown once they get into the cup and can't get back out.
What I found to also help is to have one of those weed-stop mesh things around the plants (the mesh "blankets" that you lay down so that weeds can't come through).
