Apart from scalpel or laser, has anyone had any success in reducing or eliminating snoring for themselves or their partner ?

Talk to your GP about it, there is a lot that can be done, but more importantly it's important to eliminate sleep apnea, which is both dangerous and exhausting.
A home method is tying a small ball around the snorer's waste and positioning the ball in the middle of the back, this prevents him/her from lying on his/her back, the position that most people snore in.
You can also buy nose strips to be placed on the bridge of the nose, widening the air passage and reducing snoring.
There are air masks that the snorer can wear that pushes air into the throat thus preventing the soft tissue from closing in, which is what causes the sound, but I think you have to go to the doctor to get it.
Failing all that, there's always the spare room and ear plugs...
Now that is one scary thing........sleep apnea. Find myself laying there waiting and willing the breathing to start again and when I hear that god awful gurgling I know he's ok. Never relax once I know he's doing it and am always poised to prod him back to breathing.
Unfortunately it doesn't seem to matter which position he is in or if he has consumed copious amounts of alcohol. Ear plugs don't work and the noise cancelling earphones are great whilst the music is playing but the gap in between I hear him again. So off to the sofa I go and then get told off for leaving him in the morning
So I will continue to look like a panda with dark circles under my eyes until I get my meditation sorted and drift off to paradise!
My husband snored horribly in Switzerland - not so much now that he's moved, so most likely allergy-related. He was prescribed Flonase nasal spray, which helped considerably.
Oh guys it is so easy to get rid of snoring and apnoe. I have been using a device that forces my airways to keep open during the night, practically my night oxygen supply.
They are called CPAP devices ( I know the first P is almost a R) from resmed, you wear a mask during the night and the device adjusts the pressure automatically to your breathing demands. Since using it my life has vastly improved.
On a side note if you are diagnosed with apnoe you may loose your driving license due to the possibility of falling asleep at the wheel and your insurance may not pay if you crash.
It took a week or so to get used to the mask but now I do not want to sleep without it.

The "Breathe Right" nasal strips work very well and combined with Boots herbal snoring relief, they have almost completely eliminated my 20 year snoring pattern. I highly recommend the combo.
The easiest way is to go to your doctor and get him to check you for sleep apnoea. This may mean spending a night in a sleep clinic. If you are diagnosed with apnoea you will be given a machine by the "Lungenliga" who will then bill your health insurer who will cover it.
I can only say from experience that it was worth the effort. It has made a substantial improvement for me in my ability to function.

You'll need to go to the doctor. They'll have you go to a sleep clinic and observe you sleep. Then you can have one.
