Some extra taxation questions

As I mentioned in our intro, my wife and I are considering a position in Switzerland. I would work either in Davos (skiing right outside the door can't be all bad) or Dubendorf...(advantages of Zurich)...I think the company will send us to Davos but we may be able to influence that...

couple of initial questions:

1. How do we figure ot our tax liability? Do we pay US taxes as well....

2. Anyone have a sense for living in either place and how difficult/cost to find an apartment...need a 3 bedroom and would like at least 125 2m...

any other advice as we sort through this decision will be greatly appreciated

thanks

Hi Clint,

Please use different threads for different questions - in their respective areas. These questions have been asked (and answered) many times before on other threads - please spend some time browsing the forum and using the search function to locate what you are after. If you have specific questions which have not been addressed, then please feel free to ask those specific questions on the threads you find. Our members spend a lot of time answering questions, but they aren't always happy about repeating the basic stuff

Thanks Mark...I think I've been over the entire site and read hundreds of posts...great stuff and very helpful.

What is not clear to me is does the calculation sheet that includes both the Confederation and Canton taxes (provided in several posts) - does that cover all income taxes I would pay or are there city taxes as well....I was surprised that it was about 20%...I heard horrow stories about it being much more.

Also, is there a way to search the website to find out if anyone lives in or around Davos?

thanks and sorry for the mis step

clint

I recently came acoss these. The downloads section of the Swiss Taxation site has a link tantalisingly entitled " Swiss-US tax treaty (pdf) "

Ok, in that case I'll change the subject to reflect your question and move this thread to help & tips / finance/taxation (daily life is just for discussing general aspects of Swiss life, not questions and answers)

Anyway, you have have to pay effectively three types of tax. Federal, canton and to your local community as well. The split it approximately 20/40/40 respectively. In addition you'll have to pay other deductions before the tax is taken out - unemployment insurance, old age pension insurance, etc. Health insurance is also compulsory, but isn't taken out of your pay packet.

It's really impossible to say exactly how much all this will come to - it depends on your situation. If you will be in Davos then you'd have to go look up the tax calculator for canton Graubunden and then tell it the community where you will stay. Being married or single also makes a difference. I seem to recall we had a thread that gave links to different tax calculators - have a search around for it.

As a US citizen you'll also get the privilege of doing something else that none of us have to do - pay taxes to our home countries when we don't even live there. We've had a few discussions on this as well - not good news for you though.

This also applies to US Green Card holders who live abroad if I am not correct. One also must have their primary place of residence in a country for 330 days (about one year) before they can even start to apply normal expat exemptions (somewhere between $80,000 and $85,000 a year is exempt?). I am rather angry to say the least since even basic jobs can often get over this and won't bother to explain how it changed, because it was actually a significant hike. There were a lot of articles published about this during the summer in places such as The Economist, Wall Street Journal, and New York Times... I won't go on anymore since it seems this has been discussed before.

the tax calculator link is just one but does anyone know of the thread with other links for tax, both individual and company ?

thanks

Can't search on your computer then, eh? Or you think we memorise the links...

i did but did not get any good relevant links...
