Sour Mix for Cocktails

Hi everyone

Jus wondering if anyones come across sour mix in zurich. Really want to make my own cocktails like a whiskey sour etc.

I know i can make it myself but i don't want to mess around with egg whites and making my own sugar sirup etc

Thanks

Brian

Hi Brian,

I have never seen Sour Mix anywhere here. Sorry, I know it's not what you want to hear, but it really isn't hard at all to make your own (no egg whites required BTW)

1 cup sugar

2 cups water

2 cups fresh Lemon juice (or 1 cup. fresh lemon juice and 1 cup fresh lime juice

Dissolve sugar in water and add lemon/lime juice. Refrigerate.

Thanks Latigresse

I think the egg whites are just to give that little foam on top....

Where would you get the lemon juice then or are we talking about squeezing fresh lemons and limes here...?

oh Brian - fresh. Come on....all you need is a fork and brute force

"When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. Then find someone who’s life gives them vodka and have a party. ”

Seriously, get the juice from squeezing fresh lemons and limes. It's easy enough with a reamer

or even better if you have a juicer.

Yeah i know but it would be so easy guys just to snip open a carton of sour mix and pour away

I'll get some motivation one of these days!!

Hmm, what about just getting some lemon sorbet and using that? My mother-in-law makes a tasty dessert of lemon sorbet and vodka. That's pretty good

You could start an experiment with lemon syrup and water or lemon juice. Lemon syrup is available and might be a shortcut to the fresh recipe from latigresse. Or maybe not.

If you are feeling lazy then there are the squeezy bottles of lemon or lime juice available. BTW what kind of Whisky do you use to make a Whisky Sour?

Bourbon. Like Jack Daniels or Maker's Mark.

Where are these sold? I looked for bottled lemon juice once in COOP, but didn't find

I'm partial to Canadian (e.g., Canadian Club or Crown Royal), but also like it with Bourbon.

There's a Michel 5dl lemon juice bottle, but in Coop and Migros I've only seen the 2dl Citrovin and similarly shaped bottles.

I've found sour mix as well as rose's lime & grenadine as well as ocean spray cranberry & cranberry light at the Aligro here in Lausanne. Maybe you have a similar type store in Zurich, it's like a warehouse / bulk store.

You can buy the yellow or green squeezie bottles at the Coop & Migros. They are not in the cold section though.

You can also get the large lemon bottles that Nathu mentions at the Aligro. We got all that stuff for a big party we had and still had two of those big lemon juices left over.

I'd suggest trying the food hall in the basement of Jelmoli. They have dozens of cocktail and coffee syrups and flavourings.
