Tangential fact: some cantons publish the location of radars and update the website every time they move them. Don’t know the cantonal laws, but there should be something behind the publication online of this public data: Basel City, Luzern, Solothurn
Some speed cameras generate more revenue than most people.
So, drive carefully, and don’t contribute to cantonal budgets
There’s one near here that netted the canton over 2 million francs in the first ten months after it was installed.
There have been far fewer cars up the banking and the canton has saved a fortune in barrier repairs since it’s been there.
It seems to me that the appetite for speeding fines differs from canton to canton. The greediest appear to be SG and LU (the latter just judging by the numbers of cameras around and in Lucerne).
I am not having a good year in that respect. I used to average one ticket per year, but this year I have so far had 2 already (one in ZG, one in SG) plus got flashed again yesterday in SG on the motorway. Did not see the thing early enough because the sun was in my face.
I don’t blame the city of Luzern, Horw and others around. The area is full of tunnels with relatively narrow lanes. People does manage to crash with tunnel walls even at 80kmh. So, it not uncommon to have traffic delays due to someone crashing with the walls or with a vehicle that crashed the walls. Driving at 80 kmh may seem slow, but it may be the fastest overall alternative because it means the tunnels are effectively open to traffic most of time.
When the area is under repairs, it almost becomes a videogame. Those have been the narrowest lanes I’ve driven so far. It gets exciting with all the rented motorhomes or people that pull a caravan once a year
They quite often put them up in streets near schools where children have to cross the road and people seem unable to drive according to the conditions and environment.
I must be the only one on the forum who isn’t bothered too much by speed cameras. The fines aren’t even that big for a minor infringement.
I think you are, most people aren’t fooled by the propaganda. I invite you to go to the above mentioned www.blitzer.de which I definitely won’t be using and find them placed around schools near you, I checked all the schools near me, no cameras.
I knew that use was illegal, but didn’t know that possession would be illegal. I remember wanting to import some stuff that was eventually banned for safety reasons (an xray machine that leaked radiation) - I didn’t want to use it, but tear it down for parts.
I don’t recall anyone saying anything of the sort.
It doesn’t have to be an either/or situation. If you look at how they’re implemented in neighbouring countries you’ll see much more focus on them trying to reduce speeds in dangerous areas. Placing them on wide open three-lane motorways in places where there are no junctions and rarely any congestion is quite clearly not primarily intended as a safety measure.
That’s a straw man. They’re burning one today in Zürich if you like them that much
TBH, speed cameras do reduce the severity of crashes. It’s not the same to walk away from a crash with neck whiplash than spend a few days in intensive care and a few surgeries. For pedestrians the speed threshold is much lower.
Also people like to complain about fines, but if fines were derogated and the measure would be “days with no driving permit”, people would revolt.
