Just thought I'd weigh in here with my own $0.02, since it took me forever to find a squash community here in Basel when I first arrived.
First up - there are heaps of clubs which meet across Basel/Weil am Rhein and play in the local leagues. Standard can be pretty decent. I wasn't really looking for this as I'm traveling a fair bit and my standard of squash can be.... inconsistent (maybe something to do with the molten cheese that OP mentioned...).
I used to love playing 'round robins' at other cities I've lived and I finally tracked down a group meeting at Van der Merwe fitness centre in Allschwil on Saturday morning (from 10.30am). The standard is pretty good, people are friendly and there's no aggro if you're having an off day..!
Hi guys, I'm looking for partners to play squash here in Basel. I'm 36 and my level is intermediate, I believe. Due to my activities I prefer to play mondays, tuesdays and fridays. If you would like to play contact me.
Squash players . . . go on, you know you should, you know you want to . . . anyone interested in playing regular 'social' squash in Basel, from someone that hasn't played for several years (middle aged . . . 40's) and needs physical activity during the 'grey months'
I played in a fun league and ranking nights in Biel. But I don't mind fun competition or even practice drills to get some exercise. I haven't played since February.
Leisure games are fine. Even if we get out just once in awhile.
Currently me and another guy get together at odd times during the week. Sort of spur of the moment. The courts are pretty full as last week, we went without a booking and couldn't get in.
It's possible to arrange to get a few people to go on one day and switch partners and such if anyone else is down. Let me know.
If you fancy getting up a roundrobin (small group, couple of courts and then mix up after each game) on a weekend, I would definitely come over and join you! Been looking for someone to play squash with for ages now - no one is interested in Zurich it seems. Please keep me informed
