Sri Lankan food in Basel

Hi,

I'm looking for places with Sri Lankan food in Basel. So far I know of these ones:

Taste me

Markgräflerstrasse 70

Spice Inn

Horburgstrasse 19

Does anyone know others?

Hi,

Bäckerei Epting in Elsässerstrasse 136 4056 Basel does good Sri Lankan food. Don't let the name fool you, it is a bakery / restaurant

Thanks a lot for the tip!

There is another one, rather recent, in Rosenthal:

Ganapathy Take away+Restaurant

Mattenstr. 50

There is one just under the Starbucks SBB that's the underground cocky park you enter near Starbucks. I think it's caiied city bar. Very delicious Sri Lankan food eat in or take away.

Thanks a lot, raja4u!

I went to check it out last night and they indeed have typical Sri Lankan food. Very convenient location as well.

City Bar Restaurant Take Away

Ceylon & Indian Food

Elisabethenstrasse 4

Opening hours:

Monday-Saturday 10am-midnight

Sunday 3p-midnight

Could you explain to me what is typical Sri Lankan food, and what is the difference with Indian food ? Because I have only eaten Indian food so far. Perhaps I could give the City Bar a try.

Hi kittekat,

Sri Lankan food is similar to south Indian food. Some dishes are peculiar to Sri Lanka, however, such as the kothu roti.

Most Indian restaurants in the West serve north Indian food.

Thank you. Do you know about typical ingredients, is it more or less spicy than northern Indian food, or is the difference not so big ?

Hi kittekat,

In my experience it is less spicy than north Indian food, but you can always ask to turn it up or down. In terms of ingredients, it depends on the dish I suppose. This could be a starting point if you want to learn more:

I finally went to Bäckerei Epting. For a long time I thought it was closed. It seems to me to be open only at lunch time on workdays. They serve decent Sri Lankan food for 16.50 CHF, with the twist that you can replenish your dish as much as you want until you are full or more.

That's a good place. Here's a Tages Woche article about them:

There's also a tiny Sri Lankan takeaway/restaurant at the Bahnhof in the underpass where the bicycles are parked. (It's very close to the

Elisabethenanlage exit.)

Thanks for the article! Yes, we did discuss that place in the thread, City Bar Restaurant Take Away.

There is a new Sri Lankan Tamil restaurant called Pavina in the Basel area. This one is actually in France but only 400 meters from the Swiss border with Saint-Louis. There used to be a Spanish restaurant called Flamenco there.

The sign says "Indian and Spanish specialties" but the menu is 60-70% Sri Lankan and the rest is French / Swiss. The signs are in Tamil and French. They have kothu roti and other typical stuff.
