Notwithstanding that this may be a very short thread, I'm off to St Gallen at the end of the month for the Open Air Festival plus a couple of days and we are interested in the best of what the town has to offer in terms of bars, restaurants etc beyond a nice line in altar decoration.
Preferably within short distance fo the centre, as Mikey has a problem walking in that dress.
My favorite restaurant in St Gallen is the Atrium, a 5min walk away from the HB. It is a St Gallen old timer classic, and the food (italian) is excellent:
I used to hang out at the Commercio bar, but i am not quite sure if this place is lively enough for Mikey (and his dress), also a few meters away from the train station:
There used to be very lively pub at the Postrasse, called Mr. Pickwick (or something) where the kids (and not so kids) from the International schools used to hang out...
But, to honest, everything is happens just within a few hundred meters away from the train station....
there are also others like the Seegerbar, Downtown for partyinng and for hanging out there is Die Box, Birreria etc. etc. and like lucy pointed out most of them are quite close to the train station! be sure to also check out the Bruelgasse street near the Bohl Markt where a lot of action happens on the weekends!
Frau Yokine's crew seem to be the "cool kids" from St Gallen. I've been dragged to and from many venues of which I have no idea of location and names Here's some I remember:
Schwarzengel - bar/cafe restuarant, much like El Lokal or Rote Fabrik.
Dreilinden-Weiher - weirs/Swimming pools on hill overlooking StGallen. Take the cable bahn and some beers up there. Bit like Letten.
La Bohème - rocking bar in Central St Gallen. EDIT - classic St Gallen, I just checked and they are closed on the weekend of the Open Air, so they can go to the Open air.
And the obvious, the Bibliothek (with the famous mummy) at the Cloister is worth visiting.
To eat they have an American Bar stars, and stripes excellant food, and not to expensive, or if you want a more fancy place to eat then try Dave38. The seegar bar is an in pub as they say here we love this bar . How many are you coming to St.Gallen, and which day maybe i could meet up with you all, and show you around St.Gallen, just let me know asap please, so i can organise a babysitter.
I am shocked. Therefore I am going to take the matter in hand and set up a stall to educate them in ways of temperance in an environment of devil's music, gyrating harlots and wanton* excess.
There is also a tibetan restaurant that is err.... authentic. If you want to escape a more than likely wanton fate, that is. Food is very tasty, actually. It is close to Kloister:
I had my worst dining experience ever at this restaurant on Saturday afternoon. The dippy waitress didnt know whether they sold cocktails despite a huge flashing neon sign above her head saying " Cocktails ". Obviously it was placed there as a aide-memoire. She then "lost" our orders for food and then went off duty. Thankfully we were rescued by some other forumers that had successfully ordered food. Not recommended.
Yeah I had a very tasty piece of Quiche, despite being a real man, an apple, a banana , thai red curry, and three gallons of beer from various festival stalls. We also got through four bottles of very tasty wine from a friendly wine dealer in the square near the cloister. So the overall experience was rather good.
Mikey if you are not careful you will singlehandedly destroy the St Gallen leg of the Pilgrims Progress. How can the faithful be expected to dine on cold Lasagne ?
