I'm new to aquariums. Have done research on starting a freshwater tank - I'll have a 110L tank, with heater and filter system, will be planted and will have neon tetras, guppies and red shrimp - as they like the hard water we have in CH. I will make sure to do nitrogen cycle and test for nitrites and nitrates to check its safe before adding fish in a few weeks etc.
Question is - given the swiss tap water doesn't have any chlorine or fluoride in it - do I still need to add some sort of water conditioner product - to remove chemicals etc before putting into the tank (at start and at each water change?).
I've read other posts on aquarium related stuff but didn't see anything on this?
I had some freshwaters aquariums for a long time and just used to let tap water in a tank semi-open for 2/3 weeks before changing water.
For the start, just put your substrate/plants and water with filters running for 2/3 weeks, nitrogen cycle is overkill for me.
Tap water in Switzerland is mostly basic/hard but with the natural acidifaction induced by your plants/fishes it won't cause any problem as long as you don't change all the water at once.
Tap water is treated with chlorine but the active chlorine just evaporates naturally, so if you keep water for several days before adding it, it won't contain any chlorine or fish-endangering substance.
Furthermore, it is possible that you someday reach an equilibrium where plants and filters do their job well and where the water almost needs no changes.
Furthemore, the species you are talking from are solid enough (good choice for a beginning).
Depending on where you buy your plants, you will maybe have some snail infestations, if it happens, I would suggest you one or two botia macracanta wich are nice and let no chances to the snails to develop.
