Starting an English-speaking book club in Chur

Hello,

I would like to start an English-speaking book club, which meets monthly, in Chur. I wonder if there is any interest?

I spoke to the chief at the Stadtbibliothek Chur, and they agreed to host such a club. They can even offer discounts on books purchased for the club. The library is a nice venue because it is very central, there is parking, and we wouldn’t have to purchase drinks / food unlike meeting at a cafe. Though as a foodie, I do of course envision bringing snacks and drinks! Such events also help the library secure future funding.

My motivations are that I love reading, I speak English well enough, and I enjoy bringing people together. I also hear a lot of English in Chur and have found zero English clubs thus far.

It’s official! The first meeting of the English Bookclub in Chur is at the Stadtbibliothek Chur on 13th April at 19:00. If there is decent turnout, we’ll keep it going 2nd Monday of each month.

The first book under discussion is “The Shipping News” by Annie Proulx. For more information, please see the library’s events agenda for April 13th:

Congratulations @goffredo I wish you and your cohorts good times as you discuss interesting books. Regrettably I can’t join you, The quickest connecting trains I can find is 5h22. My goodness I could read a book in that time.

Enjoy!

PS. Let me know if you want some Newfie jokes, I know a few of them.

ask the librarian to put you in contact with the English bookclub at the Zug library. They are VERY active. And I mean, VERY! So much, that they take over the whole 2nd floor of the library for the full afternoon at least twice per month…

I am still trying to figure out what towns in Switzerland could be 5h22 away from Chur. My guess would be perhaps @Bowlie would come from Genva or somewhere in Jura. I am still learning that, while on nice two-dimensional flat Google Maps one town is like 20km away from some other town, in the real world, those pesky mountains tend to really add to the travel time.

And while I am not surprised, @Izzy, that an English-speaking book club is overflowing with members in Zug, it certainly is not the case in Chur! This is the first place I’ve been in German-speaking Switzerland where most people really do not, or would certainly rather not, speak any English at all, ever. It’s great for my German language skills, but sometimes all I want to do is have an “easy” face-to-face conversation where I, like, know all the words and stuff.

And finally, for god’s sake what is with this forum software? After having logged in to this site multiple times per day for the past 7 days, only NOW do I see a little [5] badge on my profile icon, indicating that I have unread notifications of these 10- and 11-day old posts. It’s getting embarrassing being so tardy to reply; hopefully the Swiss government never groks this forum and sees my un-Swisslike tardiness if ever I should apply for citizenship, as they would certainly have just cause to deny me.

goffredo@–Ever thought of starting a Rätoromanisch book club? :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Sorry to hear about the lack of audience.

Sorry, being concerned and doing nothing is the news headlines about the Swiss Federal Council. I’m taking notes and learning

Don’t worry. It was a nice weekend. Touching the computer this weekend was a mistake (I’m guilty) haha

Well I live near Nyon and searched public transport choices. Hence the 5hour plus journey.

Yeah that’s a haul for sure! I’m 1.5 hours from Zürich and figured I’d be zipping back and forth there all the time, to go to fun events and shows and such. But the truth is, spending 3 hours of travel time isn’t something I really want to do, so I’m finding fun events to do a little closer to home.

We visit Zurich a few times a year but it always requires an overnight.
