Starting an online business & Taxes & Sole Proprietorship

Hello everyone,

I have done a search in the forum, I have found some substantial and relevant information to my topic, but I cannot find the answer to the questions below:

My status:

I am currently employed by a global company in Basel Stadt, on a B permit EU, and on the side I am interested in opening a business selling physical products. That means that I ALREADY have an AHV, let's call it AHV 1.

Questions:

(1).If I declare myself as self-employed (while working), that means a NEW AHV, call it AHV 2, will be issued under my name? Will I be paying 2 AHVs at the same time?

(2).As a B permit, will I be getting taxed at source as per my current scheme (I am not making more than 120,000 CHF), and the income (revenues - expenses) generated from "business" is taxed on top of my other salary? Or due to my sole proprietorship, the two income streams combine together, say 100,000 from my employer and 10,000 from my business and then I am taxed similar to a C permit?

(3). Registering as "Self-employed" has a couple of prerequisites such as having 2-3 customers/clients with invoices. However, to "register" my business (which is me=my business as sole proprietorship) to the registry of commerce, is ONLY if you make more than 100,000 CHF per annum. In that case you must pay VAT on every sale.

Do I have my facts right, that registering as self employed and registering for VAT (registry in the commerce registry) are two different things?

I would appreciate your help and thank you in advance !!!

1) No

2) Your income will be combined and you will need to fill in a tax return.

3) No. You have to register. If your turnover is more than 100K, you must register fo VAT. As soon as you are aware you'll exceed that limit, you must register AND you must issue VAT invoices to your customers in that period (or pay the VAT yourself).

Registering for VAT and registering as self-employed are two different things.

Thank you very much for your responses.

A couple of follow up questions.

(1). So I will still have ONE AHV number, correct? There is no such thing as 2 AHVs?

(2). Clear.

(3). I got confused with the part of "No. You have to register". Which part of my question answers?

Thank you again.

1) Which bit wasn't clear, the "N" or the "O" ?

3) You are not self employed as yet, you work for a large company.

Suggest you carry on like this until you see how your business works and if it is viable. You can register a single person company as long as YOUR name is incorporated in the company name, such as "Benitos Burittos"

Maybe your current employer does not allow additional work, check your contract first.

(1) The part where I have read somewhere else in the forum that this is possible to have 2 AHV numbers. I am trying to find out which is correct. Thus your sarcastic tone (if there is any), is not appreciated. Your reply is and thank you.

(3) What if I want to do BOTH, namely work for a big company and at the same time be self employed?

Makes sense.

That is a valid point.

Are you in Basel Stadt? If so, this government website, some of which is in English, and with a nice “Fact Sheet”, might be of help to you. The also have contacts you can ask for advice about setting up being self-employed.

Thank you!!!

Very helpful link indeed. I have missed this one completely. Appreciated

Go to AVS office and ask them directly

3) It is probably in your contract you need written permission from your current employer, failing which he could very easily sack you on the spot.
