Stupidity at local fireworks display

Went to a nearby village last night to see the fête and enjoy the fireworks. Besides the teenage kids shouting profanities and vulgar slang every time one went off (kids will be kids?), I was shocked and honestly downright angry at three dog owners with their freaking-out pooches. At least they removed them quickly but the poor things were terrorized. One was a Bernese Mountain dog who nearly took out a few people (owner included) as he tried to race to safety away from the big booms.

Did these people really just not think about the fact that their dogs wouldn’t enjoy a fireworks display?!

You were there. You could have asked them.

How should we know the answer?

Some animals are not phased. I had two cats, one would nonchalantly watch the fireworks from the window with a bored look on his face whilst the other would spend the entire evening hiding under the cupboard.

Yes, I had two kittens once and their first year of fireworks I frantically searched for them under every bed/furniture.

I found them on the balcony table, necks like swans, watching the fireworks in fascination.

Astute observation. The question was rhetorical. I guess I didn’t realize some animals aren’t bothered. I’ve yet to meet a dog who didn’t lose its mind when a mere twenty meters from fireworks.

On a different note the display was nice. Almost forgot I wasn’t “back home” for awhile.

While walking back up the hill to perdetemps after the Nyon fireworks some adolescents threw a string of firecrackers from a window into the people filled street.

Scared they sh*t out of the missus.

They quickly closed their window, but not before I noticed which one it was. I quietly pointed out their window to the friendly gendarmes that arrived shortly afterwords.

Not sure what happened afterwards, but I hope they were given the task of removing the evidence from the street, with their toothbrushes.

I always needed my dog on a leash in the last days of the year, she loved playing fetch if somebody did throw some fireworks away, as for the bangs or the glitter she could not care at all. I've taken her along on long walks to some small shows (shop demonstrations, so very small), I would never have taken her to a huge show, but that's more since I do think people should not bring dogs to such busy events.

You shouldn't question the stupidity of people, it's depressing

There are horses circling the fire at "Sechseläuten" in Zurich every year until the puppet blows up in loud noise. (Our's used to take part for several years and no, it was not sedated).

In fact, there were horses going to war at one time!

There are dogs joining hunts.

Not every dog is a snowflake. But it's perfectly okay for those who are.

LOL, got your passport yet?

People shouldn't bring their dogs that close to fireworks unless they're sure their dogs are full proof. Dogs get lost every year during fireworks, because they run away so far, and are so disoriented that they don't find their way home or to their owner. Ask animal shelters...how many dogs get lost during fireworks.. That's why even at your house, if you don't lock your gate because your dog usually doesn't go anywhere...you should lock regretting up during fireworks! Too many people still don't know that..

My two cats demand to be let out on the balcony when there are fireworks - they have to supervise! They are also totally chill about storms. I'm currently catsitting my neighbours' cats so I decided to go and check on them when people started ignoring the fireworks ban and they were not happy, so I put all the blinds down and brought them one of the big boxes my two like to hang out in as I reckoned the interesting new smells would be a distraction. They were very occupied exploring that for a while, so it helped.

I am appalled at how some dog owners in Switzerland completely ignore their pets' needs. I've seen dogs at air shows, dogs at Streetparade and yes, dogs "attending" firework displays. Many years ago a friend brought her beautiful and very well-behaved standard poodle to a grill party by the lake near Swiss Re and some idiots randomly decided to let of fireworks nearby. Since the dog was normally good as gold, she was not tied up but just lying on the ground next to us (here owner had her leash loosely wrapped around her wrist in case of other dogs showing up) but the poor thing freaked out and ran for it. Cue a three-hour search exercise which ultimately located doggo at Hauptbahnhof...

So unless your dog is a working dog like a police dog or assistance animal (and identifiable as such), I don't think it should be around fireworks. And I may be a bit too strict here, but I feel that even if your dog is not bothered, it should not be at these events. One, because of the modern human's despicable tendency to litter profusely, including dropping glass bottles on the ground and two, because of the signal it sends.
