Substitute Teaching

I am a recent college grad with a BA in Studio Art/Education from the USA and am looking to substitute teach at an English speaking private or International school in Zurich area. (My husband has a work visa here.) Can anyone offer advice?

Thank you!

Best to apply to the International Schools offering your services to see whether there are any open or part time vacancies. http://www.circleofschools.ch/en/index.cfm?treeID=31 gives you an overview of most of the schools in the Zurich area.

good luck! there are new laws in CH so most of the schools can only get permits to work for European english speakers...(i've looked into it, i'm the same qualifications as you). many of the international schools won't do anything under the table and the local schools who need english teachers require TEFL or similar certs. do look for private jobs with individuals. there are always people and families looking for native english speakers to tutor/practice with. good luck

If you look at the jobs page on the IBO website, you will see they ask for Swiss or EU citizenship as a requirement to apply for a job in Switzerland.

I somehow doubt that a school would be able to apply for a work permit for you to substitute teach. But why not look at other areas besides teaching? I don't know enough about what you studied to offer you specific ideas but I do know that in order to find work here sometimes you have to think rather creatively about where your skills would fit. You may have more success in finding work if you can speak some German so do consider taking a course first as when you do look for work, if you can make inquiries in German this may get you further.

Good luck

Thank you all for your responses. I appreciate the information that you have offered.

As for the work visa, when I moved here recently we were informed that (as of January this year?) if one person is approved for a work visa, the other partner need not apply... and can work freely...

This is worth checking and, if you came here before the start of this year, whether or not the new rules apply to you as well...

Just found this, on the Swiss Work Permit Rules page of the Zurich Relocation site... They are a company that helps companies relocate staff into Zürich...

So, no need for a permit... as long as you have the residence permit...
