Sugar Free Hot Chocolate?

I tried searching for this info and could not find anything ---

Is there such a thing as sugar free instant hot chocolate where you just add the packet and a cup of hot water?

Would love to know if you can find it here....

Can be made with milk or water. Migros or Coop

That's powdered cocoa, not hot chocolate mix.

But when it's mixed with hot milk it becomes unsweetened hot-chocolate, wouldn't you say?

It becomes a bit of a lump if you're not careful , and when mixed with water (as per the OP), it becomes something very uncivilised indeed.

But isn't it only the sugar that's mixed into the cocoa-powder that stops the stuff in the packet turning into 'a bit of a lump' when you add hot water ?

I've been making hot chocolate with cocoa-powder for years and then just add a very small amount of sugar.

On the other hand, it's probably because of this that I'm turning into 'a bit of a lump'

We've looked, to no avail, for instant hot choccy sachets.

When you consider how popular things like Options , in a dozen different flavours, are back in UK, I'm surprised there isn't a market for them here.

It's all well and good saying that the Swiss prefer "proper" Swiss hot chocolate, made with Swiss milk from Swiss cows fed on Swiss grass in a Swiss field in Switzerland, but I'd guess there are more offices with kettles than milk warming facilities.

That's right!

FWIW, I've never cared much for the taste of those instant mixes. And the sugar-free ones (like sugar-free yogurt) always seemed to be cloyingly sweeter than the ones with sugar.

Why not heat some milk* in a saucepan and add a chopped up chocolate bar (70% cocoa, with very little sugar) and stir? It'll take a little longer than instant, but it's heaven in a cup and will taste 1000x better than anything from a packet. Just sayin'

*almond milk works well, too

because it sounds like a royal pain in the ass?

There are a couple of brands I have tried.

Coatina do a sugar-free one in a tub, and there is also the Suchard Express no-added-sugar version, also in a tub. I don't like either of these! Both are when made up with hot water!

Says who, lazybones??

It doesn't take any more time to heat milk than it does to boil water, and it tastes a whole lot better

The main problem I see with this is that the OP asked after sugar free. I've had a very hard time finding sugar free chocolate bars here and however reduced the sugar may or may not be with 70% cocoa, if the OP needs to avoid sugar for some reason, it maybe still too much.

Secondary problem is not knowing environment the OP has in mind - it could be in an office or someplace else where a pot of hot water is handy, a stovetop, pans and milk less so.

Somehow forgot to say this:

I've seen Swiss Miss cocoa packets at REWE in Germany and also at Lolipop candy store (I believe there is one in Zurich train station). I'm unsure whether they carry the sugar free ones or not.

Organics shops should have something to offer! Either chocolate without sugar (cavalier is a belgien brand who specialise in sugar free). Another option might be carob, you'll have to see if they supply it though.

The best I've ever had is one from a french company called Saveurs et Nature, they supplied a jar of grated sugar free chocolate that you just added to hot milk: amazing! I would'nt recommend this with water though!

Interestingly enough the Options brand packaging says it is produced in Switzerland (all flavours from White to mint, orange, etc.) I have not found it in any Swiss grocery, including the upmarket Jemoli/Globus variety.

I have had good results from dissolving a generous spoon of the dissolvable cocoa (Cuisine shiny pink package) with a few sweetener tablets in hot water, frothing with one of those aerolatte electric whisps while adding some milk for creaminess. It does the trick and has far less sugar than the Caotina that is supposedly diabetic friendly.

This is a good idea!

There might be quite a simple reason for it: In Switzerland hot chocolate ist traditionally made with milk and I don't know many adults who drink it, with one exception: hot ovomaltine on a cold skiday.

The flavouring thing to me is anyway quite weird. I will never understand, why somebody prefers coffee and chocolate made up with artificial fllavouring to an excellent and tasty original product. But that's purely me and a matter of taste.

I know, I know she asked for sugar free, but I wasn't sure if it was because, as you pointed out, she needs/wants to avoid sugar or if it's more a matter of convenience (e.g., wanting to keep a few packets in her desk for a quick hot chocolate fix). Of course cocoa powder would fit the bill, but you know what a mess it can be and that it doesn't dissolve so easily, even in hot liquid, without a lot of stirring The offices I've worked in here all have milk, along with coffee and tea and oftentimes a microwave. If the OP has access to a microwave, she could easily heat up some milk in a bowl.

Anyway, it was just a suggestion, particularly as I have not seen packets of hot chocolate here and I personally am not a big fan of instant drinks because of the taste. Unless one is a diabetic, I know a number of diet plans and nutritionists allow (even recommend) dark chocolate, despite the trace amounts of sugar, for its health benefits -- all in moderation, of course
