Hi
I've hired a car for the weekend and to maximize I was thinking to go for Sunday.
I envisioned something like a country pub, i.e. quiet and good food at a reasonable price.
Any thoughts/recommendations?
I have the car so it doesn't have to be in Basel, could be just over the border.
I had thought about the Funf Schilling but then found it it is not open on Sundays.
I dislike funf shilling as I find the majority is pre cooked packaged crap... a few friends eent , I didnt prime them and the verdict was the same.
I am surprised/shocked ... everyone I know said the complete opposite and that the majority of the produce is produced locally, is seasonal and extremely fresh.
Don't want to go off topic, but am curious to hear other opinions on Funf Shilling.
Funfschilling is good if you stick to their specials. They're cooked fresh. Order a non-special and it could be reheated/pre-cooked stuff. The prices are good. Lots of outdoor seating. Cute but often clueless staff (it's a kind of charity where they help youngsters without jobs).
Not open Sundays. Lovely bike ride to get there (once you're out of Kleinbasel and in Weil am Rhein).
I had the steak a few times, I wont again and Im not a food snob.
Adrians comment about clueless is also an off putting point.
I've always found Fünfschilling great. Probably not worth the trip from Uranus, rob1, but definitely from Basel and surrounds.
I've always had excellent steaks there, and have never complained about the sub-ten euro price tags on them. Their best dish (IMO) was spaghetti with prawns (I'm doing it a disservice with that very abbreviated description), but last time I was there, they'd pulled that dish from the menu ... basically replacing the spaghetti with penne, or something, but it just didn't seem right.
Yes, the staff (all three sexes) are cute but I haven't found them particularly clueless -- just sometimes a little hard to find, unsurprisingly, given the number of diners during busy periods. And most, if not all of them, speak English (I meant the staff, but probably the diners, too).
But as stated in the OP, it's not open on Sundays.
This is the Fünfschilling review thread, right?
I don't get the hype about Fünfschilling, I've been there a few times and always found the food very ..meh. I also would not describe it as quiet, as OP wanted.
What I can receommend - try Auberge Bellevue in Wentzwiller, I believe they're open on Sundays. Charming typical Alsatian decor, they also have outdoor seating if the weather is nice. Not the cheapest, but the food is very good.
try muhle in binzin, open on sundays also
I like funfshilling . . . only if i order off the specials menu.
Even the salad was drowned in a vinegar . . . as in nothing else but vinegar.
I tried it agian sometime leter (Salad is my fav food) and the dressing was much better.
Had the chicken curry there before & i left it on the plate. Horrible.
I keep waiting to find out why people see it as so special. TBH i just go back for the wine. . . and I buy 6 bottles form the shop when I leave every time
You cannot order starters & mains at the same time as they will all come out together. (Learned that the hard way) also on a couple occasions my husband has been served before me . . . . and his is finished by the time mine arrives.
One waiter spilled a bottle of water on my legs... and just not a little bit. I was soaked... he muttered an apology, ran off (I assumed to get me napkin) when he arrived back many minutes later he brought a fresh bottle of water, dumped it on the table and ran off again before i could ask him for something to dry myself with.
My last time there was last week. It was the best experience there we have had yet. The salad was nice (Chicken over cooked but they cant seem to cook it anyways so I was expecting it) my husband had the english breakfast & that was nice. We ordered a starter (It came out the same time as the mains but we planned for that this time ) and the wine was... as usual... lovely.
they are so busy they can not act like a normal restaurant and serve starter then main.
order starter first then try for 10 mins to get the attention of the raging hormone teenage server whilst he/she is staring at someones arse/boobies.
i went months ago as it was the meeting point for a biking day, we had the handwerkers breakfast and they couldnt manage to serve the orange juice and coffee.. says it all really.
I use the farm shop though.
Thanks everyone for your tips and links. On the advice of a colleague we ended up going to ...
Restaurant: Dornach Sclosshof ( http://www.schlosshof-dornach.ch )
Location: 10km outside Basel
Description: In the country side with great views over Basel from the Terrace.
Food: 6/10 (we both had tomato soup, followed by veal breast with spätzli).
Total:chf 83.50 (this included 1 beer & 1 apple juice)
Staff: friendly and attentive
Summary: was ok and with the weather we had, it was a great location to be.
Negatives: apart from price ... desert menu was again the typical commercial/mass-produced ice cream card .. very disappointing. To compensate for this, we drove to the restaurant at the top of Gempen and had a house made desert from there.
