Support for children in Switzerland

What will happen in Switzerland if a family finds out that they are expecting quadruplets or more! ? Also suppose that family already has 2 or 3 children?
Does the cantonal government give some kind of subsides? What about the rent? Do landlords give priority to families with multiple kids?
I imagine it would cost a fortune to raise such a family in CH if that family doesn’t receive financial assistance or at least the gov renounces to collect income tax from that family.
A relative of mine is in that situation but they don’t live in Europe where cost of living is high and apartments have often 1 to 3 bedrooms.
Have you encountered similar situation? Or do you have experience with big families?

Also what are the odds for the quadruplets to be identical?

The odds of having identical quadruplets are estimated to be approximately 1 in 15 million, making it an extremely rare occurrence. This rarity is due to the requirement that a single fertilised egg splits three times to produce four genetically identical embryos. Only around 72 documented cases of spontaneous identical quadruplets exist in medical history.

It is very improbable except for IVF.
Citizens o C permit are eligible for rent and subsistence subsidies, but it isn’t a bed of roses.

Usually for all these subsidies it is enough to become long term unemployed or parents living together and no longer able to pay their bills, no quadruple pregnancy needed.

Most likely they will ask for all your wealths and bank statements before deciding if there is a financial eligibility.

That’s a very low probability. Almost impossible in smaller countries such as Switzerland. Maybe in China or India where there is a higher natality per woman.

There are employers that pay some kind of financial aid (200 to 300 CHF per child) to their employees when a 2nd, 3rd or 4th child is born. Is this common in Switzerland?

Some do. Why? Are you expecting 4 kids?

It’s called Family Allowance (Familienzulagen). It’s basically social security, extremely common. The amount varies from canton to canton.

It is paid by employers. But if you look at the funding is just contributions from all worked redistributed to workers with children, and a bit from other taxes.

No, not us. One of our relatives but they don’t live in Europe. It’s way too expensive to raise children these days. I cannot imagine someone having quadruplets in Switzerland and not getting some kind of financial assistance.

I don’t fully agree. Lots of second hand clothing and other stuff for low prices. Free KiGa and school education. Subsided by the municipality after school sport activities for as low as 200 CHF/year.

Of course there are families that spend 20 000 for Gymi preparation course or have some expensive hobbies, but it’s their choice. Growing a child is too expensive if the parents choose is to be too expensive.

Where? We paid 3000 a month in the worst period.

Yes, because you and probably your spouse work. It was the same for us, but there were kids in the same kiga whose parents were paying nothing. More annoyingly, there was one particular mom who was on social support, but the dad and the man she lived with was very well-to-do entrepreneur.

As far as I know, KiGa stands for Kindergarten (obligatory part of school), so it is free if your kid goes to public school.
After school care is not free, true, but our daycare costs went down once our kid turned four and started Kindergarten.

@TinyK, I see your point, but health insurance, though cheap(er) for kids than adults is definitely more expensive the more kids you have.

Funny how different the perspectives are. Health insurance costs close to nothing for kids. What was it, 60 a month? Daycare was 120 per day.

Yep, I think those posters are confusing KiGa with KiTa.

Obviously there will be some extra costs for children in KiGa if both parents work but it’s nowhere near as much as full time KiTa costs.

There is family allowance for all kids which is designed to help with day to day costs and some cantons pay more if there are more than 2 children. Child allowance easily covers the cost of health insurance.

We had one kid in 1/2 day Hort after the “free KiGa” and the other in full day care. 50 CHF + 120 CHF = 170 CHF. Per day.

Yes, you’re right, I confused kiga with kita.

No, I don’t work. And for the parents of quadruplets would probably be much cheaper if one of the parents don’t work at least until the age of 4, unless both have very good income.

I don’t think it’s reasonable so send kids to KiTa for the triplets and more. The nanny, who lives with the family, would be much cheaper. On any day one of the kids would probably be sick, so the parents would need sick leave nonstop.

I’ve always wondered, why does Zurich pay an absolute minimum. It’s a rich canton, so why not invest some more money in families with kids, like most of the other cantons do?
