Can you guys tell me what's the best sushi / Japanese restaurant in Basel?
tks,
Yoko at the Heuwaage is very good, too - but the bar is somewhat impersonal. However, they have the best prices.
My least favorite is Comino - very expensive and not as good as the others, IMHO.

I've been several times to Negishi though - good sushi as previous posters said, and I also avoid Camino...very disappointing....
I could recommend Yoko. The Bar loooks a little bit booring, but the personal is very nice and the running sushi is funny.
They also have a delivery service and a nice website with webshop.

It's bad because of...?
Might be no japanese is rolling the sushi. Who cares?
Don't take this serious. Try both and take your own decision.
From my own experience there's nothing to say against yoko's sushi and by the way they have been tested by the consumer organization "Kassensturz" as cleanest sushi bar of switzerland. So I don't fear there to eat raw fish. This is something to take serious.

Let's start with the ground rules, for those who haven't eaten sushi in France before. Japanese restaurants in France are better termed 'Japanese-inspired'. They're invariably run by Chinese, the fish tends to be fresh but very limited in variety (heavy on tuna/salmon), and I think every place buys their menu from the same supplier. ( here's an example )
There are the ubiquitous gyoza, meat/seafood skewers ( brochettes , a French creation that is very distantly related to yakatori), sweet cabbage salad and sweetened soy sauce (regular is also available). Most items are available as 'menus' with soup, salad, and various combinations of sushi/sashimi/brochettes.
So, having done the level-setting and warned you that this isn't Tokyo, on to the review.
A menu with soup, salad, and a plate of 10 Nigiri (3x salmon, 2x tuna, 1x mackeral, 1x sea bass, 1x egg (tamago), 1x fish roe, 1x shrimp) cost a very reasonable EUR16. The fish was fresh, but not terribly well-prepared. The nigiri pieces were too large, in particular the pieces of fish.
Still, I went in with limited expectations and came out pretty happy. It wasn't terrible, it satisfied my sushi craving, and I left with a full belly and a full wallet -- pretty much the opposite of my sushi experiences on the Swiss side of the border.
Best in town: Wasabi in Gùˆterstrasse
Very good: Comino
All right: Negishi
not good enough for me: Yoko
The only good japanese restaurant in town was in the railway station, it closed. No japanese cuisine in Basel anymore.
