Sushi in Zurich

Ok - I'm a newbie both to the site and (soon) to Zurich. I'm moving from California and for anyone who's a sushi lover and ever been, the quality/availability is fantastic...and so I was wondering if there are any sushi go-ers who can recommend a good place or two around Zurich where I can soften the withdrawl symptoms? Any help is greatly appreciated!!

I believe there is a sushi-all-you-can-eat on Tuesday in JIL ( www.jil-zuerich.ch ), but I can't tell you if it is any good as I don't eat sushi myself..

hey, I just found a new function on the site - it's called " search "

Sorry to disappoint you - if you're coming from California, there's nothing here that compares. There are a couple of decent places, but nothing of Cali caliber. The best is Ginger. But Ginger is in two locations - you want to go to the one that's on the Seefeldstrasse. (The other Ginger is not nearly as good.)

Best Sushi ever: Sala's of Tokyo. Expensive, but you can be sure that it's almost like straight from Japan. Sala does the best Sushi I have ever had, and I had quite a lot (also from Sushi chefs, not just cheap stuff).

Also, there is this place called yooshis (or something like that), which is cheap and okay, i eat lunch there sometimes. Really not as bad as you'd think.

Don't worry Moran, there's plenty of sushi around, much of it good. There seems to be a split here between very traditional, straight-forward sushi and more innovative restaurants. I imagine you're used to the later style more than the former. Most places have high quality, fresh fish. You just pay for the transport costs! Ginger is indeed the best I've had in Zurich. Here are some others.

Picnic (near the Rennweg tram stop on Bahnhofstr) has a sushi bar and take-away trays. It's great for lunch. I believe it's run by the same team that does Ginger. Has a loyal customer base, though we miss one of the old chefs who has moved on.

Blue Note (Stockerstr.) is always fresh and tasty.

Isakaya (near the Hbf) is very traditional and high quality. Won't find as many imaginative offerings here.

The restaurant (Satori?) at the corner of Alfred-Escherstr. and Gen.-Williestr. (near the Rentananstalt tram stop) is very good as well. It's small, but isn't very busy at night since it serves a big lunch crowd.

Sushi bar on Bleicherweg at the Stockerstrasse tram stop - give it a miss. Quality varies too much. Variety doesn't.

If you do a search, you'll find some really good discussions on japanese food.

But here's a good start:

Zurich: Decent Japanese restaurants?

It even lists my favourite japanese place.

has anyone tried the all you can eat here?

any idea of the price per head and what is inclusive?

cheers

Nic

My friends and I had a dinner their on Saturday. I was the only one who didn't have any sushi, but the others thought it was very good. They told us they have a star cook from Carlton who is great.

According to their web site ( JIL - CLUB & DINING - SIEWERDTSTRASSE 71 . 8050 ZÜRICH . OERLIKON ), all you can eat is 45 fr. but I have not clue what is included and what not. There is a menue there though too if that helps.

Thanks for all the great tips!!! I will have to work through them one by one

I also came across a place called Samurai which I thought was pretty good. The spicy tuna was great and the rolls had more of the non-traditional flare to them, which being from Califorinia is a bit more of what I'm used to.

thanks again for the recommendations!

Yup, that's the place I recommended above... booking is essential.

hahaha. Delayed reaction or what?

Nah ... just been off sushi

There's a place called Barfuesser in the old town area. They server decent Sushi IMHO. The place has an interesting history and serves as a gay/lesbian hangout as well.

Yooji's has decent decor and food at affordable prices.

When you order, they have this funny fill-in-the-form-for-your-sushi thing

which reminded me of a school objective-questions test.

The one I visited is on Josefstrasse 112 in Zuerich (if I remember correctly).

They have other outlets on St Urbangasse 8 and Seefeldstrasse 115.

My favorite Sushi place:

http://www.shinsen.ch/

I have been to their location at Staffelstrasse 8 several times and I found selection, quality and price to be good. It looks like nothing from the outside, be forewarned.

I have not been to their Restaurant Ginger at Seefeldstrasse 62, but heard nice things about it.

yooji's is an nice place for sushi

they are at seefelt and bellevue

although sushi generally is very expensive here (as all food)

Yooji's at Bellevue is too crowded and noisy.

The other one(s) is better, methinks.

My fav one is still Kaiten Sushi in Lucerne -- on account of the cute sailing boats doing the congo line, the cargo of which is your goodies.

try Yooji's in Josephstrasse, its not so packed. theyre good, but maybe not the real jap style.

other popular one at "globus"

At least Yoojies has japanese chefs. I will not eat Gweilo sushi.
