Swiss Airmiles

I can probably do this myself, but somebody here may already know the answer or have calculated it...

When redeeming airmiles with Swiss, is there a hard and fast rule about where to use them for maximum benefit ie is it always better to use them for long haul flights, or always short haul, or doesn't it matter?

The reason for the question is that I do some pretty short flights (eg hop to London or Barcelona) plus some mid ones (Moscow) and we are planning some long haul ones next year. It seems like all of the "European" ones are 30000 miles for an economy seat whether or not it is a 1 hour or a 3 1/2 hour flight - and as the cash price for each is very different, then one gets more bang for one's buck in the mid-range category. And in terms of long haul flights, I don't even understand how its calculated

Anybody work in the Miles and More business, or know how to use these most efficiently?

Try the miles & more forum on www.flyertalk.com

I use the BA forum in the same website...usually very easy to get an answer on such questions.

Always try long haul.

The ticket price from short haul flights is for a big part determined by airport taxes, that you have to pay yourself (unless you pay it with miles too, but that is expensive).

IMO it only makes sense if the tickets are really expensive AND redemption tickets are available.

I agree with k&e, book long haul onlyas all taxes are to be paid by yourself or at the expense of more miles.
