Swiss films worth watching

Roman Polanski's remakes of the following:-

The Running Man

The Lost Weekend

The Great Escape

A Lucky Man

...

Reise der Hoffnung (Journey of Hope)

By Xavier Koller. Film about a turkish family trying to enter Switzerland by the "green" border, based on a true story.

Won the Oscar for the best foreign language film in 1991. Rather oppressive.

I liked Snow White.

I also liked "Bergauf Bergab"

Jeune Homme rocks.

It has everything, german, firm tits, swiss german, french, Zürich, Geneva, saggy tits, baby.

Awesome flick

Agree with Patxi: Samir's "Snow White" is very good.

Great suggestions. I will see if I can find any of them on Netflix.

I saw the Die Schweizermacher when it came out. It was great.

Has anybody seen "Ernstfall in Havanna" (2002)

Was that any good?

Beat me to it again:

I remember les petites fugues! All my family loved it... therefore there was no way on earth I was going to watch it! Just too uncool for a teenager.

I like the white polyester pants and the hairdos from the preview you attached!

I wonder if it is available on VHS or DVD?

Any opinion on "Beresina oder die letzten Tage der Schweiz"?

Thumbs up/down?

I don't like many Swiss films. I even found Vitus pretentious.

I find the humour too slapstick, or if serious they are so depressing. I don't like the acting.

I liked Reise der Hoffnung and Das Boot ist voll, but depressing? There was also one about a Greek woman who works in a canteen, well acted but again- depressing.

Ilike Iranian films of course and Iranain film makers. Washington, DC - Hailed by Roger Ebert as “the new great American director” for his recently released movie. Goodbye Solo, Now I'll duck before DB throws a shoe.

I didn't like so much "das boot ist voll". Everybody is a caricature. Jews are those great but sad intellectuals that are deep into their thoughts. The Swiss farmer is dense and xenophobic etc...

Iranian movies are fabulous I agree. With no budget, heavy censorship, and a cast composed of often non professionals, they make very moving films. I never missed the Tehran film festival when I lived there.

Yes, I thought it was good. If you like Viktor Giacobbo, you should like the "humour" of this film.

Another Swiss film showing now:

Pepperminta , by Pipilotti Rist.

Very colourful, apparently. Has anyone seen it yet? It strikes me as a little like Balamory for adults.

Beginning of the 80's I saw "Sennentuntschi" and it was a really disturbing film. They're now planning a remake but apparently it's run into (financial) difficulties.

The story is about 3 farmers who are up on the alm during the summer and they create a life-size female doll for company. They talk to her, feed her, have sex with her, get jealous of each other about her. The doll comes to life and, when the time comes to go back down to the village after the summer's over, the consequences are disastrous. Illustrates the loneliness and primitiveness of some regions of Switzerland very well (as a refreshing contrast to the "Heidi" culture)

I forgot that Emil Steinberger was in this movie. He is fabulous. I like his stand-up routine.

Messidor (a Swiss Thelma and Louise) is pretty good too. I also bought it on Amazon as a cheap used VHS tape. It is pretty dark in a Jacques Chessex sort of way. Emil Steinberger has a small part.

I saw "Grounding" and was disappointed. They should have stuck to the facts (just like in the movie United 93 for example which is tight and effective). The fictional characters they introduce like the little boy and side story attached do not add anything and make the film a little odd.

It is a bit like those 70s American disaster movies where there are a myriad of side stories beside the main drama.

The only Swiss film I've seen is "Die Räuberinnen", a comedy.

It gave good insight in to one side of the Swiss humour!

Here are a few:

This one I saw at the Locarno film festival, not the best movie I have seen, but should be in the cinemas now or soon:

Enjoy.

It is not Swiss but an Italian movie on being...an Italian in Svizzera! My dad made me watch it before moving here. As a cautionary tale .

It is pretty funny, in a cute-funny kind of way. It is called "Bread and Chocolate", ("Pane e cioccolata") and it is, I think, from the same era as "Schweizermacher".

Cheers

Great Nino Manfredi!

Bienvenue en Suisse a comedy about how the French perceive the Swiss.

I had a really good laugh !!
