Swiss films worth watching

To honor the [since yesterday] renowned "Zurich film festival", I would like to know if there are Swiss movies you actually like.

There are many tedious pompous bores but some gems here and there also.

Let me start by a drama that is very good.

"The Invitation" from director Claude Goretta with jean-Luc Bideau.

It is the story of an office party that ends disastrously.

I was unable to find a clip. I found a used VHS tape with English subtitles a few years ago for 99c on Amazon.

Hm... quite honestly, I don't know any..

Canabis. .......

Die Herbstzeitlosen

HOME by Ursula Meier just won this years Swiss Film Prize

"The story focuses on the drama that unfurls within a family when a highway is built right next to their house, blocking their normal route to the outside world (school, work) and making their daily routines a huge challenge. The family’s resolve to stay despite the highway and the noise, danger, and chaos it causes has them adapt in small and drastic ways: Marion, the bookish middle child, wears homemade hazmat suits to deal with the toxic emissions; they cement the walls and windows to reduce the noise. As the tensions within the family caused by the highway start to escalate the humor starts to fade and absurdism sets in, threatening to destroy the once happy-go-lucky family."

Do you have a link by chance (or are you just referring to some recreational activity)?

Die Schweizermacher (1978)

This romantic drama follows two policemen whose job is to investigate the lives of foreigners who have applied for Swiss citizenship.

Among the applicants they must screen are a French psychiatrist and his wife, and a ballet dancer.

The married couple are quickly accepted, but the dancer's life offers some objections.

However, since the younger policeman has fallen in love with her, there is a chance that she, too, will win Swiss citizenship.

'Cannabis' was shown on DRS2 last Sunday evening.

Probably the all time Swiss film hit was the 'Die Schweizermacher ' . This was made in High German and Swiss German. I actually saw the High German version on BBC2 in the UK.

It is at over 30 years old now, but as a satirical comedy on different people wishing to take up Swiss nationality, still has resonances today - such as the immigration police noting what colour bin bags one potential candidate put her rubbish out in...

This one is a recent one and just so very funny

I'm quite looking forward to seeing Cargo .

I love scifi.

Ta-dah! Here's a few....

Die Schweizermacher (1978)

The Swiss making a movie about domestic disturbance & noise pollution

I would recommend HANDYMAN with Marco Rima. A great comedy. Now that I've lived here for 6 months, it was nice to see local Zürich spots on screen.

I don't speak Swiss German so had to read the subtitles but enjoyed myself. Definitely worth it.

Ohh, somene's not happy...

From the comments section on that link:

I quite liked Les Petites Fugues, a film from the late 70s about an old Swiss farmhand who wakes up and realizes that the Swiss way of life had prevented him from actually living. He buys a mofa and proceeds to start doing everything he ever wanted to do. It seems like an EF kind of movie.

I could only find the trailer, which looks actually very pretentious.

I agree, zwissmiss! Do you/does anybody by chance have a download link for this incredibly touching movie? I'm talking about torrents... I happended to get across Walo Lüönd, the guy that plays the main role in this movie 20 years ago, I even travelled with him for a week. Since, he must have disappeared (Wiki says he is still alive, though).

Vitus

For less than 20chf you can have the DVD sent to you without shipping costs and with no customs taxes. It also has the English sub-titles.

(I think you can also pay with AIRMILES should you not want to fork out the 20CHF).

Höhenfeuer

Two teenage siblings live high in the alps with their parents. The boy is deaf and cannot speak and the girl would have liked to continue her education but must stay on the farm to help. The farm is a typical mountain farm one would have seen 50 years ago. The siblings fall in love and the consequences are disastrous.
