[Swiss Job market] English-Speaking Companies

Hi,

In my search for a job, I noticed that many sites from the cantonal economic development agencies have a list of international companies with headquarters in the canton.

These are not necessariliy all English-speaking companies (which is the topic of the thread), but it's at least a good source for finding more internationally oriented companies (and hence, higher probability of english being spoken).

I just wanted to share some of these links, as they might be useful (for me they are !). I've just looked at the cantons which are of interest to me, but maybe someone can add the links for the remaining cantons ?

ABB Semiconductors Ltd

Our Team are looking. We are based 3 mins from Lenzburg (Canton Aargau) Train Station.

PM me Please. Thank you

The place is booming - yes.

Comparable or better salary - Not really. You will get 1/3rd or 1/4th of what you get here. Unless of course google in bangalore pounced on you

(You will actually get something like 10 times of your swiss salary but then 1CHF = 40 INR, so you get that nasty figure of 1/4)

Better/comfortable life - Yes

Quality of life in public - sucks (public infrastructure is really bad)

Quality of life at home - can be as good as you want it to be

The why the hell the somebody would want to work here in switzerland as compared to India?

1. if you value the quality of life in public part e.g. public transport, cleanliness, law and order etc.

2. If you plan to save most of your salary here and then return to india. currency conversion does wonders here.

3. You generally want to have a more global experience.

4. If you want to see Europe without busting all your savings.

5. Or may be you just landed here for whatever reason and then get hooked to the place

I am a jobloss too. who can help me to find a new job?

My job is in Manufacturing Engineering/Quality, in Alstom, please let me know if you know of any positions, in Manufacturing and/or Quality Assurance, in the Berne, Basel, Zurich or Geneva area.

Hello! It's my first time posting on the site, in fact I just happened to find it as I was getting more and more frustrated at the job prospects for me in Geneva!

I am currently in NY but I'll be moving to Geneva in late June. I am an ESL teacher here- I have my graduate degrees in ESOL and Linguistics and plently of experience. I was thinking that finding a job as an English Teacher would be easy, but I'm seeing that finding a job and permission to work maybe more difficult than I thought. I am not limited to teaching at all, although I do love and I would be open to teaching business English or anything else available.

Does anyone have any ideas on where I should look or apply? Any info or leads provided are so appreciated!

Thanks so much!

Try private schools, they have less requirements.

If you are referring to private schools compared with state schools in Switzerland then the requirements are the same.

Thanks so much for the responses... my fiance and i were planning to get married in about a year or so. at this point because of work, we may just speed it up and get hitched sooner so as to avoid applying for a work permit and the chance of not getting it. Would it be easier and more acceptable to schools I am applying to if I had the permit B? Maybe someone know of other jobs that are available or possible in the Geneva area that are good for English speaking, education, translation or something related? Thanks so much again for your input and replies- everyone has been very helpful!

When members indicate they got there jobs from a jobsite do you mean you uploaded your CV to the jobsite and a Swiss agency headhunted you via the site or you found a job on the site, applied for it and got it...

In the UK it is common to get a job through a jobsite this way i.e. uploading your CV and being called by agencies. Is this the case in Switzerland?.

Any advice, I live and work in Switzerland, and desire a new IT job, would it be best to upload my CV onto a jobsite as per usual, apply to agencies, directly to companies (English speaking only) etc. or a combination of the above?

I have done both. Last time I applied for anything I thought relevant to my skill set without uploading my CV.

This time round I uploaded my CV. I have had a few more inquires from agencies like that. However, the down side is that they do not always read your CV properly and try to get you go for jobs you are not qualified for or are obviously bad fits. The one other benefit is that sometimes positions are not advertised and the agencies go through their databases to find relevant people before putting the ad online. So some things are never advertised.

So the choice is yours.

My wife has been looking for work since we got here.

Has anybody knows of english speaking companies that are hiring.

She is a language teacher, but without speaking german she has no hope.

I would not say that you have no hope not speaking german, but you would have to deal with students at a higher level - ie not much translation needed. When I did higher level German certificates, I never spoke english. There was no need, and it defeated the purpose. I would also suggest, from what I know, becoming a certified teacher for whatever language she teaches, eg. English has I believe CELTA (or something like that) and once you have that, it will differentiate you from the rest. Some ideas anyway.

Having said that: Obviously you are in a foreign country, and although people here speak english, they are not likely to do training in English.

Thank you for reply Worrelpa! I was looking to add to your thank yous but as a newbie can't see that I have that facility
